20 years ago (1991)

A Crow Wing County deputy and a Breezy Point police officer were assaulted about 1 a.m. while arresting a 23-year-old Brainerd man on suspicion of DUI. Deputy Corky McQuiston and officer Troy Schreifels were treated for bruises and lacerations.

40 years ago (1971)

(Photo) Brainerd's Centennial celebration came to a close Monday with the Labor Day celebration at the county fairgrounds. Pictured is one of the many kid's races. There were horseshoe throwing, model airplane demos and a concert by the local musician's union.

 

60 years ago (1951)

While this summer of 1951 will go down as a “lush” growing year in Minnesota, Fred Kimball of S. 5th Street can point to a “lush” potato harvest. He planted one potato in a hill in his garden plot. At harvest time this one potato had produced 70 large potatoes.

 

80 years ago (1931)

Farmers in Mission Lake Township were eating bear meat today, rejoicing over the fact the marauding animal is no more. The bear, shot by Gilbert Sabin and Tom Hall, had already killed five sheep in the area. Warden Cardle said the shooting was justified.

 

100 years ago (1911)

Alderman James Elder made an earnest appeal to the council for more arc street lights in the 2nd ward. He claimed that Alderman Fogelstrom of the 4th ward was getting the lion's share of the lights, and the north side should have more due to population growth.
