The former Hardware Hank building in downtown Brainerd is being remodeled as the 371 Downtown Bingo Palace. Brainerd Amateur Hockey Assn. is buying the building from former Mayor Bob Olson, and three non-profits will operate bingo there.

30 years ago (1981)

Henry Ordemann plans to play golf until he has to “ride around in a cart like these kids in their 20's,” he said with a menacing look at his young caddy, Barry Johnson. The 64-year-old Ordemann started at 5 a.m. and played 130 holes, non-stop, to win a bet.

40 years ago (1971)

It costs them $20 a day, they fight mosquitoes constantly, the food isn't the best and they work hard for eight hours a day. Twenty-eight Teen Corps volunteers are doing all this to improve Camp Confidence, a camp on Sylvan Lake run for state hospital residents.

60 years ago (1951)

Brainerd is participating in a test of the nation's aerial defenses. Brainerd DAV members, headed by Jim McComas, will man their lookout atop the court house this weekend. U. S. and Canadian planes will fly planned routes to give spotters a chance to practice.

Something should be done to mark country roads so that a visiting driver will not run slowly up a fair road, then come full tilt on a long sandy stretch, like Hay Creek hill, which has trapped many machines.
