20 years ago (1991)

A leaf-sapping insect that targets only birch trees is back, but no more prevalent than in previous years, said Jim Rabehl, county extension agent. The birch leaf miners lay their eggs under leaf buds, then the hatching insects eat the leaves as they unfold.

 

30 years ago (1981)

(Photo) Actor Paul Newman made his annual appearance at Brainerd International Raceway in the Pepsi Grand Prix last weekend. Newman's car lasted only 23 laps in yesterday's feature race, being forced out by mechanical difficulties.

 

40 years ago (1971)

(Photo) This 23-0 northern, largest of the season weighed in locally, was caught at Ponto Lake near Hackensack by Bill Melville of St. Cloud. He used a Lindy Rig and minnow combination to bring it in.

 

60 years ago (1951)

The program of land acquisition to expand the training and maneuver area of Camp Ripley is under way, said Adjutant General J. E. Nelson. Robert Phillips, Little Falls attorney is in charge of the program, which may take more than a year to complete.

 

80 years ago (1931)

The Chippewa Indian baseball team from Mille Lacs stopped the Brainerd Laurel Lunch baseball team 16 to 15 in 11 innings of a free-hitting game. Joe Gabiou, Brainerd hurler, went the distance. All but one of the Indians are graduates of Carlisle University.

 

100 years ago (1911)

The South Side Juniors defeated the Koop All Stars last evening by the score of 16 to 5 in a game played at the Smith grounds. Highlight of the game was the home run hammered out by Benda, who batted the ball into Boom Lake.
