20 years ago (1991)

Baxter is an unlikely field for a battle of giants, but this town of 3,695 has a Target and Wal-Mart opening this summer just a quarter-mile apart. They already have a Kmart and a Mills Fleet Farm, and just cut the ribbons opening two large supermarkets.

 

30 years ago (1981)

(Photo) Brainerd Fire Chief Ray Shortridge surveys the remains of a home in Barrows that was leveled by a fire last night but not discovered until today. The family was in Brainerd yesterday and forced to stay overnight when their car wouldn't start.


40 years ago (1971)

Capt. Lee Fundanet, Brainerd, an Army pilot in Vietnam, flew into Can Tho airport and asked the tower for landing instructions. He thought the voice that radioed back sounded familiar. It was. It turned out to be his brother, Spec. Mel Fundanet.

 

60 years ago (1951)

George, age about 40, has another home today, but it doesn't make much difference to him. His new home is the city jail for two days while police check his background. His former home was a cardboard box at the Brainerd dump, where he spent four days.

 

80 years ago (1931)

Plans are shaping up for the Central Minnesota Golf Assn. tournament, to be held June 27 - 30 at Pine Beach on Gull Lake near Brainerd. The event is under the auspices of the St. Cloud Country Club, but their course only has 9 holes, while Pine Beach has 18 holes.

 

100 years ago (1911)

The lobby of the Ransford Hotel is being enlarged by removing the partition and taking over the writing room. The “Q” billiard parlors will be moving to the site formerly occupied by the Bijou Theatre, and their space will be the new writing room.
