20 years ago (1991)

Tony Bonsante of Crosby-Ironton won the 147-pound title at the Upper Midwest Golden Gloves championship in Minneapolis. Bonsante will carry a 14-2 record to the national tournament in Des Moines. Both losses were split decisions to nationally ranked fighters.

 

30 years ago (1981)

In a stroke of luck that lawmen said was “hard to believe,” the sheriff's department nabbed a burglary suspect on the first night of what was planned as a three-week, 24/7 stakeout. Capt. Dick Ross had lined up support from a variety of law agencies.

 

40 years ago (1971)

An expected poor fawn crop this spring has caused the Minnesota DNR to cancel the 1971 deer hunting season in the northern half of the state. Commissioner Herbst said the ban could be statewide, the first time that has happened since the 1950 season was closed.

 

60 years ago (1951)

The world famed Minneapolis Lakers basketball squad will play a team of top-notch college and pro all-stars in the Washington High School gym. All ten of the Lakers stars will play here, including big George Mikan, Slater Martin and Bud Grant.

 

80 years ago (1931)

Complete calculations on the special school election today revealed a strong majority for construction of the new Franklin junior high school, the acquiring of the north side site and removal of current buildings. Votes were 2,008 in favor and 1,281 opposed.

 

100 years ago (1911)

Today is a red letter day on the Cuyuna iron range. The first shipment of iron ore has been made. Promptly at 10 a.m. two monster road engines were attached to 42 cars of ore from the Kennedy mine and pulled out for the Soo Line docks at Superior, Wisc.
