Wildlife artist Les C. Kouba will be the first inductee into the Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame. A banquet will be held at Madden's Lodge to honor the renowned 75-year-old painter. The hall honors outstanding service in promoting the environment.

The night wind cut through the tight knot of men as they stood on a deserted road and listened to Deputy Harold Holk's briefing. Later, the drug raid - two months in the planning - resulted in one arrest, charges against seven more, and piles of drugs.

Two 85-foot gates, each seven feet high, have been installed in the new dam at the Northwest paper mill. The local paper mill site is one of five dams in the nation equipped with such gates, the others all being found in New England.

Fire Chief Frank Fuller was overcome by smoke in battling a fire in the basement of the former Lyonais grocery on South 6th Street. Feeling faint, he fought his way through smoke and flames to the outside. There he collapsed but was revived with an inhalator.
