A Minnesota House committee has approved designation of Highway 371 from Little Falls to Cass Lake as the Paul Bunyan Expressway. Brainerd's John Puckropp said the issue of a Brainerd bypass and making 371 a four-lane were not addressed.

40 years ago (1971)
Gravel and dirt roads in this area started turning into quagmires in some spots over the weekend as warm temperatures melted winter's ice and snow. Not helping was rain which fell last night and today. One road south of Brainerd was already under water.

James Allen, who returned from the Civil War unscratched to till the soil in Iowa, and later in Minnesota, died of a stroke at his Cross Lake home. He was 88. He spent 20 years working in Wadena as a veterinarian.
100 years ago (1911)
Fremond Turcotte will soon open a general store and a malt shop at the government dam works near Gull Lake. He will reside there and will move his family from Brainerd as soon as satisfactory arrangements are completed. His many friends wish him well.
