20 years ago (1991)

Former County Sheriff Frank Ball confirmed reports of his intention to seek the post of Brainerd chief of police. Currently administering the NET VI Drug Task Force, Ball said he had discussed this with Sheriff Dick Ross and that the two could work well together.

 

30 years ago (1981)

Two of the township elections in Crow Wing County were so close that one recount and one coin toss will decide them. At Sibley Township, Archie Youngberg had 86 votes and Roger Rudbeck 87. In Wolford Township, Larson and Dahlby tied with 39 votes.

 

40 years ago (1971)

Brainerd's Warriors, making full use of their height advantage and experience, breezed to a 68-41 victory over St. Cloud Apollo in the opening round of the Region C Class AA tournament. Brainerd sold out its allotment of 750 tickets and could have used more.

 

60 years ago (1951)

A well-dressed armed robber, age about 30, held up Dols Paint & Glass store on S. 7th Street at 1 p.m. today. He entered through the back door and held a gun on employee James Pointon, who was told to open the cash register. He escaped with about $200.

 

 

80 years ago (1931)

A local man, arrested with a pint bottle of moonshine whiskey in his possession last evening, was in municipal court today. He said he simply carried it for another fellow who didn't have a coat to carry it. He could not name the other “fellow” and was fined.

 

100 years ago (1911)

Tonight the electric light power in the residential districts of the city will be turned off from 6 to 10 p.m. due to the failure of the generator at the Northern Pacific shops. Best to take stock and have either a lamp or candles on hand.
