The Brainerd-Baxter Youth City Bowling Tournament has crowned a new champion. The top five competed in a stepladder roll-off, with Nate Hooper beating Dave Schultz and Tony Whitlock, Brian Fleck beat Hooper and Terry Carper beat Fleck to win the crown.

Brainerd's Jim Crawford fought back gallantly from a first-round knockdown, but lost a close decision to Steve Adams of Minneapolis in the 165-pound division of the Upper Midwest Golden Gloves championship. However, two other Region 4 fighters won.

Enthusiasm is beginning to build in Brainerd about the Region C Class AA basketball tournament game against Apollo at Little Falls. Bob Miller is forming up a snowmobile caravan to the game and it may number well over 100 machines for the 30-mile trek.

Playing without the services of star Jim Smith, benched with a sprained ankle, the Warriors won their opening Region 6 contest 37-34 in overtime over Breckenridge. Jerry Hill saved the day with a drive-in play to knot the score at 33-all with 45 seconds left.

Attorney Hilding Swanson returned last evening from the Twin Cities where he went on business. While there he attended the annual Yale alumni banquet at the Minnesota Club in St. Paul.
100 years ago (1911)
Martin Leckscheidt, residing four miles northeast of Brainerd, was awakened at night and shot what he thought was a wolf. But upon examination his prize turned out to be some traveler's dog.
