20 years ago (1991)

Ski Gull, Inc., the Brainerd lakes area's only downhill ski facility, is threatened with loss of its tax-exempt status. Tom Burton, president, said the IRS has filed notice of intent to withdraw the exemption. Attorney Deb Hallbeck will file an appeal for Ski Gull.

 

30 years ago (1981)

Steve Mans, with a 711 the first weekend, claimed the singles title of the 1981 Brainerd Men's Bowling Tournament. Mike O'Reilly and Chuck Klang took the doubles title. Reichert Bus of the Twilight League rolled 3,102 to take the team crown.

 

40 years ago (1971)

(Photo) Despite last night's blizzard, more than 400 persons attended the fourth performance of “Music Man” at Franklin Junior High. The players won a standing ovation, but they said the audience deserved one, too, for braving the storm.

 

60 years ago (1951)

Joe Koering again topped the Big Five for the Classic League bowling action with a whopping 660 count. His 245 was also the high individual game. Mike Dosen did the unusual when he rolled three identical games of 179 for a 537 total.

 

80 years ago (1931)

Frank Barnes, 87, Civil War veteran with the 148th Illinois Infantry, was among his comrades on the honor roll today, the memory of him remaining to preserve his spirit on earth. The old soldier breathed his last at his home on 9th Avenue NE after a short illness.

 

100 years ago (1911)

Convinced that a certain Brainerd man was guilty of criminally assaulting his daughter from the age of 10 for several years, six men went to his house and called him out. He denied the charge but was tarred and feathered anyway. To date, no warrants have been filed.
