Ignited by one of the strangest goals of the season, the Brainerd Warrior hockey team defeated Alexandria 3-1 at the Brainerd Civic Center. People were talking about Brainerd's first CLC championship in 10 years, based on their 9-1-1 CLC record.
30 years ago (1981)
For a program used to a few ups and downs, 1980 proved to be an “up” year for the Brainerd YMCA. Despite a major competitor appearing on the scene, and loss of funding from the school district, the annual budget is balanced, said director Don Kerr.
40 years ago (1971)
A delegation of protesting taxpayers demanded that the Brainerd School Board hold the line on spending — including no raises for teachers this year and cut back on extra curriculars. Bill Brown, spokesman for the group, said “we can't take any more taxes.”
60 years ago (1951)
The embargo on freight shipments east and west from Brainerd over the Northern Pacific railway was lifted today as the nation's nine-day railroad strike was virtually ended.
80 years ago (1931)
Bronko Nagurski, football and basketball ace, will bring his quintet of basketball stars to Brainerd to play the Russell Creamery team at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Nagurski's famous team has posted a record of 51-5 over the last two years.
100 years ago (1911)
R. W. Driver, of Ninth Street NE, and two helpers endeavored to heat up the seven horsepower engine of his wood saw with a torch this morning, when the gas tank exploded. They were badly burned and the team attached to the blazing engine bolted.
