Saturday will be the last day to send a first-class letter for 25 cents. Effective at midnight Saturday the rate goes to 29 cents for a first-class stamp and 19 cents for a postcard. At the same time new rates go into effect for Canada — 40 cents, and Mexico — 35 cents.

 

30 years ago (1981)

Dave Nord was leading the Minnesota Community Colleges in field goal accuracy (71 percent) through Jan. 24. He'll keep that lead after pumping in 34 points in an 84-77 Brainerd victory over Itasca. Nord hit 16 of 21 field goal tries in his best performance.

Stubborn sub-zero temperatures continue to cling to the Brainerd area today with only a mild hint of a break for the better. The mercury last night hit 39 below zero, and the high temperature yesterday was 17 below zero.

 

80 years ago (1931)

Relentless pursuit of marauders who clubbed to death 15 beavers from the American Beaver Ranch near Pillager, has led to the arrest of two men. Discovery of a car with blood-soaked interior in a Brainerd garage put officers on the right trail.

 

100 years ago (1911)

Frank Kulmala, the missing Finlander who disappeared Jan. 10, has not been located. There was a rumor he was found on the western Mesabi Range, but it proved groundless. His two brothers are still offering a reward.
