After 16 years in public office, former Crow Wing County Attorney Steve Rathke is moving to the Twin Cities to join a law firm there. In a speech to the Rotary Club he said that he could no longer coexist with a group of people that wished ill to him and his family.

30 years ago (1981)

Brainerd's plans to host a portion of the St. Paul Winter Carnival I-500 Snowmobile Race were shot down as the event was canceled for the first time in its 16-year history. There simply wasn't enough snow, and the forecast was for clear weather ahead.

40 years ago (1971)

Carl E. Erickson of Brainerd was elected potentate of Aad Temple of the Shrine at its annual meeting in Duluth. The Temple's jurisdiction includes about 3,400 Shriners. Erickson is Crow Wing County attorney and senior partner of Erickson, Casey.

60 years ago (1951)

As a tribute to the life of M.L. Finkelstein, co-founder of the Paramount Theatre, the movie currently showing will stop for two minutes at 3 p.m. when the funeral rites are conducted in St. Paul. Rev. Brandon of the Episcopal church will read the tribute.

100 years ago (1911)

A telegram from Pine River says that the steam logging railroad belonging to the Northland Pine Co., running from Cross Lake to Longville, is being torn up.
