30 years ago (1981)

Rep. Don Samuelson of Brainerd says he is drafting a bill to be introduced in this session of the Legislature would give communities the option of fluoridating their water. After a 20-year fight, Brainerd was forced to fluoridate its water a year ago.

40 years ago (1971)

Crow Wing County gained 2,690 persons during the past ten years, despite the city of Brainerd losing 1,231, according to the final census figures just released. The loss for Brainerd is 200 fewer than first thought. Baxter increased from 1,037 to 1,556.

60 years ago (1951)

Mary Duerr, 18, a senior at Washington High School, is Miss Brainerd of 1951. She was chosen from a field of 12, with other finalists being Bonnie Carlson and Joanne Turcotte. Three judges from Little Falls interviewed the girls at the Ransford Hotel conference room.

80 years ago (1931)

Following a turbulent executive session that started at 7 p.m. and went past midnight, the county board reappointed Walter Murphy as county highway engineer. He is on probation, given the state road and bridge report, but his salary will continue at $3,000 per year.
