The Brainerd Warriors girls' basketball team opened the season with two losses but now has won seven straight, the latest a 52-39 victory over Monticello. The Magic packed the lane against Margit Rinke and Sarah Northway, but Shelly Breen scored 17 points.

Rep. Harold Knutson, (R) St. Cloud, Minn., has introduced a bill in Congress to fix minimum water levels for six northern Minnesota reservoir lakes. We are not opposing the nine-foot channel, he said, but want to preserve our lakes for our people.

100 years ago (1911)

On January 1 the Northwestern Telephone Exchange announced a reduction in the rate of telephoning from Brainerd to Deerwood. The old rate was 50 cents, and was the subject of much trouble and discussion. The new rate will be 20 cents.
