Brainerd snowmobile racers Eric Loge and Rick Strobel were among qualifiers for today's finals in the Brainerd International Race of Champions at the county fairgrounds. Loge finished fifth in the Class C semifinal, and Strobel was sixth in the Class B.

30 years ago (1980)

A recent call to Crime Stoppers has cracked six crimes, sparked recovery of $3,000 in stolen merchandise and led to two arrests, said Capt. Dick Ross of the sheriff's office. Property recovered included that from burglary of the Lake Edward Township Garage.

40 years ago (1970)

M. K. (Dutch) Cragun of Gull Lake has conceded defeat by a four-vote margin in the District 58A legislative race. The original tally showed his opponent, Bill Walker, Pine River, winning by an 11-vote margin out of 11,686 votes cast.

60 years ago (1950)

Alert orders for the 194th Tank battalion of the Minnesota National Guard have been received due to the continuing war in Korea. The 194th is comprised of units from Brainerd, Aitkin, Milaca and Long Prairie under command of Lt. Col. Carl Erickson.

80 years ago (1930)

With Mayor F. E. Little's resignation accepted with regrets, the city council last evening postponed the appointment of his successor until the January 5th meeting. This means the council president will serve as acting mayor, according to provisions of the city charter.

100 years ago (1910)

Mrs. Parker Waite, of Gull Lake, spoke of the improvements being inaugurated near their farm. For a time they boarded 15 men who were putting in a telephone line from Brainerd to the site of the proposed Gull Lake dam. Construction should begin in the spring.
