Tom Isle didn't exactly become a boxing great when he started in the local boxing program 30 years ago. He entered the ring for his first bout with his trunks on backward. But Isle, now a volunteer extraordinaire, was yesterday honored as 1990 Citizen of the Year.

The decrease in Brainerd's population may not be as great as earlier projections indicated, according to the U. S. Census Bureau. Preliminary figures now put the city's population at 11,463, a 1.7 percent decrease from the 1970 figure of 11.667.

Brainerd insurance man and Northwest middleweight wrestling champion Hal Masem came close to cashing in on his own medical insurance as he lost to junior heavyweight Gene Laska. Masem was thrown from the ring five times and hit his head twice.
80 years ago (1930)
While two Brainerd men were putting up a fish house near Squaw Point on Gull Lake, they noticed ducks on the ice, and bluebills, at that. They found the ducks couldn't fly, so they chased them and caught them, coming home with duck dinner instead of fish.
100 years ago (1910)
Brainerd entertains a large crowd at the convention. Northern Minnesota asks for its rights. Gov. Eberhardt supports reapportionment. Special trains are arriving from all sections of the state: Bemidji, St. Paul, Duluth, Minneapolis, Crookston, etc.
