Bill would make it harder for felons to own guns

Posted: January 18, 2013 - 11:45am

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The first firearms bill introduced in the Minnesota Legislature this session would make it harder for convicted felons who've served their time to regain the right to own a gun.

The bill by Sen. Barb Goodwin, DFL-Columbia Heights, would eliminate the right of violent felons to petition courts for restoration of their gun ownership rights. Goodwin wants to transfer responsibility for those decisions to the Board of Pardons.

The bill is just one of what could be several proposals to change Minnesota's liberal gun laws.

Rep. Michael Paymar, DFL-St. Paul, wants to require background checks for all Minnesota gun sales, including those at gun shows or between private parties, similar to a proposal from President Barack Obama.

Some gun rights supporters say no new restrictions will pass without a fight.

Remember when

Ted Kennedy's bodyguards had machine pistols in the Capitol building? That was a felony that they all got away with.

worthless bill

I'm sure felons across Minnesota are cowering in fear that they won't legally be able to posess a handgun. That bill isn't worth the paper its printed on. Its the publics own fault for continually re-electing these idiots who don't have a clue.

What I see in the news

It appears that most of the shootings are not done by felons. They become felons after the fact. Then they are lifers and don't need a permit.

Just one more really stupid waste of our politicians time

but if it looks good on paper and sounds like a politician is doing a great job, that's all that matters, right?

Wasn't that individual in New York, a felon? The one who burned

his house down and then waited for firefighters to arrive, killing 2. If I remember it was a friend who gave him those weapons. So I just see more useless red tape.

Such dupes!

The Administration is lying! NBC News Special Report is now reporting that NO assault rifle was used in the Newtown school shooting! The AR15 rifle WAS left in the car and not used. So this assault on the people's Constitutionally guaranteed rights to the use of firearms is based on [filtered word] (capital B, capital S) put out by the administration. Stand by folks, because there is more information soon to come forth about this (so called) random school shooting!!!

Do you by chance have the link on that report from NBC -- I tried to find it at their website and at several major papers, but couldn't locate. Thanks.
