Radinovich squeaks by Lueck in 10B race

■ Radinovich squeaks by Lueck in House 10B race

Joe Radinovich, 26, a union official with the American Federation of Government Employees, narrowly defeated former Aitkin County Commissioner Dale Lueck 11,087-10,764 or 50.69 percent to 49.22 percent in Tuesday’s election.

The Crosby resident, who won the House District 10B seat in his first bid for office, said his biggest issue was the inequity in the education funding formula and the effect on outstate Minnesota schools. He said he would be interested in committee appointments in the areas of K-12 education and agriculture but would serve wherever he could be helpful. He said he’s interested in programs that would put Minnesotans back to work but noted that a lot would be determined by the state budget outlook in the next two years and revenue projections.

Radinovich was traveling to St. Paul on Wednesday for a news conference and said he would take part in electing DFL leaders Thursday night.

During the House 10B race a paid Republican staffer left his job shortly after it was discovered he misrepresented himself in a letter to the editor in which he claimed to be a Hill City Democrat who was urging Democrats to support a Democrat other than Radinovich. The winning candidate wasn’t sure what effect the letter may have had.

“It’s really tough to say,” Radinovich said. “To say that one thing tipped it is really difficult.”

Lueck, a cattle rancher, said Wednesday he was trying to catch up on four months of ranching chores. He said parts of District 10B broke for the Democrats, mirroring the state and the nation. He said he thought the letter from the Republican staffer played little role in his defeat. More significant, he said, was the large number of outside expenditures spent on both sides of the race. Lueck said the DFL caucus spent collectively $27,000 on a radio commercial aimed at him, which was more money than he raised for his campaign.

“It came from both sides,” Lueck said. “Joe and I had a heck of a time getting our voice out there.”

The result in Lueck’s view was a bonanza for broadcast companies in central Minnesota.

“The radio stations in this area...that was Christmas twice over,” Lueck said.

He said he wouldn’t rule out another bid for the Legislature but that two years was a long way away.

Lueck said he was worried that the Democrats took control of both houses of the Legislature and more state spending is in the works.

“I’m concerned we may be on a path in Minnesota that may not help our economy,” he said. “I’m afraid that’s where we’re headed.”

Dale, We all know union boys got time and money to hehaw round the countryside and at the end of the day the ole ranchers still gotta keep water and feed in the fence 7 days a week.. The union boys usually leaning on a shovel 4 days a week so they can campaign and get paid for it.. Ranch on my friend.. We're gonna need stockpiles of meat because obama is gonna drain the rural economy and suck'r dry. let the clean shaven youngen prounce holdn his clean shovel.. Right on, Eyolf

Eyolf, I share your opinion. Joe was at gatherings around the district all the time, and Joe was always honest and ethical in his campaigning. He worked hard, and he earned the seat he won.

You know, I think Lueck was

You know, I think Lueck was right when he said that both he and Joe had to overcome some difficulties with getting THEIR voices heard. I received cards in the mail almost every day calling Joe a "Powerful Union Boss" and touting his evil being. However, I did not receive any of that kind of mailing from the DFL or union groups. I did not hear a radio spot regarding either Dale or Joe, but that doesn't mean there wasn't one.

The difference I think came in that Joe was out knocking on doors and talking to people every spare minute. I did not see Dale at all. I think both candidates had to work hard to overcome the negative ads put out there by people outside of their control. Joe just did a better job of that this time around. It was very close in the end. A very good race.

I am excited to see what this young man can do, and I hope that even those who voted for Lueck will find that they have an approachable legislator who will work hard for all of us. I think he will be one to watch because I think he has the intelligence and skills to go far.

I'm not sure I would suggest

I'm not sure I would suggest that he needs to out and out quit his job. Obviously, our legislators can't work 40 hours a week every week at other employment because they are expected to be in session. ANY job could be considered a conflict of interest (all people would vote and make choices for the good of their livelihood...it's human nature) and we don't expect all of our legislators to forgo careers to hold office. Have a small business? You would propose legislation to help your business out, right? That would also be considered a conflict of interest, but we don't ask people to sell their businesses when they take office.

I think the decision whether to keep his position, quit, or take a leave of absence is just something that will be between Joe and his employer.
