Majority of Crow Wing County voters support amendment questions

Posted: November 7, 2012 - 6:45am

■ Marriage and voter ID questions pass in Crow Wing County

Marriage and voter ID amendment questions may have died at the state level, but they won majority support in Crow Wing County.

Crow Wing County voters approved of the measure to limit marriage to a man and a woman by a 60 percent to 40 percent margin with 20,954 yes votes to 13,770 no votes. There were an estimated 343 blank votes.

The amendment to require a photo ID to vote was much closer with 55 percent of voters in favor. There were 19,156 yes votes cast compared to 15,493 against with an estimated 418 blank votes.

The marriage amendment

The marriage amendment carried all Baxter precincts with the largest margin from Baxter Precinct 2W with 62 percent voting yes compared to 37 percent voting no.

No votes were dominant in the county’s most populous city. A majority of no votes were cast in Brainerd’s Ward 1 Precinct 1, Ward 2 Precinct 2, Ward 3 Precinct 1 and both Ward 4 Precincts.

Margins were often close, with the difference measured in nine to 52 votes. But the tightest precinct came in Ward 4 Precinct 2 with 268 voters in favor and 272 against.

Crosby was an indication of how close votes could be with the city split nearly in half with 209 votes in favor of the amendment and 200 voting no. Ironton and Riverton were also evenly split.

Twenty-two precincts out of 64 had yes votes accounting for 60 percent or less of the vote. Ten precincts had 70 percent or more in favor of the amendment. Some of those precincts were small such as Gail Lake with 77 percent of its 44 voters in favor. The amendment’s greatest support came from Dean Lake Township with 80 percent of its 59 voters in favor. Eighty-two percent of voters in Fort Ripley supported the amendment with 34 people voting in the city’s precinct.

Photo ID amendment

The photo ID amendment to require a valid photo identification to vote carried in 47 of 64 precincts, but the margins were often close.

Thirty-two of the precincts had less than 55 percent of the vote in favor of the amendment. Ten precincts had more votes against the amendment than for it — Brainerd Ward 1 Precinct 1, Ward 2 Precinct 2, Ward 3 Precinct 1, Ward 4 Precinct 2, Crosby Precinct 2, Ironton and the townships of Little Pine, Rabbit, Ross Lake and Wolford.

Another nine precincts were nearly split in half. The largest of them — Brainerd’s Ward 3 Precinct 2 — had 415 votes for and 415 votes against the requirement. That scenario was closely repeated in, Ward 3 Precinct 3, Ward 4 Precinct 1, Crosby Precinct 1, Cuyuna, Fort Ripley and Nokay Lake Township. Others like Rabbit Lake Township — with 108 votes against and 105 votes in favor — continued to show how closely divided Crow Wing County voters were over this issue.

Fifteen precincts had voter approval of 60 percent or more.

Some of the amendment’s strongest supporters were in the northeastern corner of the county where 77 percent of Gail Lake Township residents supported the amendment for the highest percentage in the county. Support was also high from neighboring Timothy Township at 65 percent with 70 percent of voters in the city of Manhattan Beach in favor. Other supporters were just south of Brainerd and Baxter with 71 percent of Crow Wing Township Precinct 2 voters in favor of the photo ID.

Sad reflection on CWC

Unfortunately, these results show how behind the times we are in this county. These proposed amendments have been a waste of time, money, and emotional strain on many.

Perhaps, the authors of these silly proposals can concentrate their efforts on legitimate issues like the economy, employment, and the national debt....

Looks like the democrats wiped the floor all round outside of the only woman who does not require a Halloween costume from the 6th.

So, Dems. now its time to put up or shut up...

Placing those proposed amendments

on the ballot secured DFL victories state-wide. Who would have guessed how it would have backfired on the GOP?

They turned the state from red to BLUE!

Crow Wing County voters

I am so proud to be a resident of Crow Wing County that voted the way we did on the amendments! It just goes to show that there are still people of biblical morals and values in the area; you can't argue with the numbers!

I'm glad they (amendments) passed in CWC!

Yep, It makes me feel a little better that something I voted for passed in our county. This election just goes to show you that times have changed throughout the U.S.A.. We need to start calling our nation U.S.S.A. - United Socialist States of America! Don't worry... By the end of his second term, there may NOT be an America left!

Oh My....We Are Doomed!

To listen to some of the right wing wack-a-doodles we are doomed! Put in supplies and get ready for the coming apocalypse. Oh My... Lions, Tigers and Bears! Oh My!

How many more times do we take these Chicken Littles seriously? The Focus On The Family organization made similar predictions after the 2008 election. Guess how many of those dire predictions materialized? Go ahead, take a guess.

At least the rest of Minnesota did the right thing. Way to go Minnesota!

IGNORANT!

Well, I DIDN'T vote democratic this year! I can no longer say - "I'm proud to be an American"! Now that Obama has another 4 years this nation is in for it! I'm just waiting for the day when they come knocking to take our guns away! That will probably happen with - in the next 3 years from what I have read! The price of utilities, food and gas will go up! People will start getting lay - off notices because whatever business they are employed with won't be able to afford to offer health care to their employees. Whether they know it or not everybody's life is going to change and there won't be a damn thing they can do about it! GOOD LUCK to ALL!

Careful larry

The last I checked. Motley is past/west of the dumb line. I can still remember when folks in your neighborhood didn't know what those red #'s were at the end of their driveway were for & that was before they were blue!!! Intelligence really?? LOL

old news

the majority of the population are old people, what do old people know? old news. and the idea that they are superior to others who are different than what they view is the norm? old news. hence the populous vote.

Purposed

I am not a liberal. I have many points of view that might be considered liberal, but I am not. These points of view that might be construed to be liberal are equal rights for all and not imposing your beliefs on others. The fact that this was even a circle to be filled is a direct result of the Christian Right imposing their views on everyone else. And yes it is nice to be in a place where they don't debate global warming, gay people can do as they choose as they should, no one thinks the devil runs the world (and how impotent is god if the devil runs this world), evolution is a giving, because of evidence, and the world is not considered flat!

Republicon Congress , Get ready for your New Years Eve cliff !

Since the Republicons in the US Congress have already started their program to get relected in 2 years seems they have few choices going forward. ( Not a bright future)
It seems the MN Lawmakers didnt seem to understand that concept as well.
Congratulations Gov Mark Dayton !
Your job of moving the entire state forward into the light
( including CWC) just got easier !!!!
NO more distractions !
