Minnesota parties watching polls like never before

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota's political parties are gearing up to watch the polls like never before on Tuesday, after back-to-back statewide recounts in 2008 and 2010.

GOP Chairman Pat Shortridge and his Democratic-Farmer-Labor counterpart Ken Martin said Monday they will send more poll watchers than ever to polling places to look for problems on Election Day.

Martin says the DFL has more than 500 lawyers watching polls around the state. The party is also running an election hotline for voters who encounter problems getting a ballot.

Shortridge says his party is "much better prepared" this year to stop ineligible ballots before they're cast.

Both parties also have teams of lawyers ready to jump into disputes that can't be immediately resolved in polling places.
