Cravaack, Mica discuss
fishing legislation at Mille Lacs
Rep. Chip Cravaack, R-Minn., and Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chair, met Monday with Mille Lacs Lake resort owners at Hunter Winfield’s Resort to discuss the status of legislation to prevent a Coast Guard mandate which would cost launch captains several thousand dollars each.
The Mille Lacs Lake Freedom to Fish Act is currently stalled in the Senate, Cravaack spokesman stated in a news release.

Federal Control of Boats on Navigable Waters
Before complaining about our Rep. Chip Cravaack meeting with Rep Mica you might check into what the legislation and associated REGULATION actually requires. It has been a number of years since I looked into the regulation. As I remember, it covers all commercial (and all non commercial boats over a certain length) on navigable waters. Mille Lacs, the Rum River, the Mississippi River and others are included in those waters. Required would be extensive education and excessive fees on all applicable boats and their "captains". The article is very limited in it's explanation of the legislation and the associated regulations.
So, quitcherbitchin and if you want to keep it up, first find out exactly what Rep. Chip Cravaack is trying to do! This is not a matter of conservative or liberal position but government over regulating us!
oar,
you sure spanked cap that time.
Hey Old One ! Maybe you have NOT been keeping up with the news !
Duh .
Maybe you have been out of the area. ( coma)
Because this is rather OLD NEWS -4 years old ! ( something you probably aspire to)
Chipsters efforts are about CG safety regulations that apply to small 6 pack charter fishing boats ( on Fed Nav. waterways) that require operator of the boat to have some limited knowledge of marine safety .
I suppose you think small fishing " boats for hire" that carry people dont need to be safe or the operators require any training what so ever ?
Therefore no license cant vote is OK , no charter license is over regulation and government getting in your way !
Please......

Yea...a little more Mushroom Light will help the darkness...
Helps with the typing...
hey captron
It isnt old news. It is current news. Do you have ANY idea that this could potentially affect every waterway connected to the Mississippi?
Do you realize how much of the local economy is tourism and fishing? Do you realize how many tourists hire guides?
I think its time to put your ignorant buttocks on ignore.
Disagreeable , FOUR (4) YEARS AGO , Hello 4 years ago !!!!!
The USCG notified people who charter boats or guide fisherman in their own boats ,that Effective Jan 1st 2009 ,they would begin enforcing current regulations concerning the requirement for a Coast Guard License for those that operate small boats on Fed Nav Waterways where the USCG has jurisdiction. They did not enforce that rule previously.
Those fishing guides were notified FOUR YEARS AGO that if they continue to operate their boats on those waterways they must take the CG course , pass , the test ,and pay the Lic. fee.
Most reputable professional guides spent the $ 200 for the safety course & Lic. 4 years ago... End of problem.
I dont remember why Mille Lacs Lake falls into the same Federal waterway category as LOW , Rainy , Superior, Mississippi, Missouri etc . Go figure it out.( think Rum River pre dam)
The Chipsters adoption of this long lost , very very insignificant problem is fairly ridiculous compared to what has NOT been accomplished by the Republicon DO Nothing Congress in DC. Thank goodness the one term congressman is already toast.
Rick Nolan , you do not have a very tough act to follow. Congratulations !
A few issues that affect even more of us in Eighth District
will, no doubt, be discussed during the three fall debates. None in Brainerd area, but we can watch them. Put 'em on your calendar: http://www.messagemedia.co/millelacs/news/state/article_1acd1da4-01a3-11....
Since Congress is not in session until after election day, Congressman C. theoretically has more time to meet with consituents. Has anyone seen a press release from his campaign office regarding public or "town hall" meetings for us regular folks? Please advise, if you have. Thanks.
A real issue for some....
Legit stuff here. May not affect that many people but for those it does, it is significant.
Well timed election year pandering?
Perhaps, but unlike many that republicans have us voting on this fall, at least this is a real concern he's working on.
Hey Old One ! Maybe you have NOT been keeping up with the news !
Say there captron, take a look at the stuff at:

You may note that Gull Lake is a Navigable water as is the Pine River Reservoir (oops - they forgot to call it the Whitefish Chain) and many others. This thing is live and formenting thing. If it is not changed drastically it could cause problems for many whose income comes via their guide services on our local waters.
I do not disagree that some classroom time (maybe via internet) followed by testing is called for or even necessary. However I would venture a guess that our local guides are very well educated and or endowed with common sense such that they can and do things properly! However, the licensing, course fees and etc may very well be a bit expensive or in this case overboard!!
