A 46-year-old Nisswa area man — who was arrested Wednesday following a report of a physical domestic at a residence near Lake Hubert in Lake Edward Township — was charged Friday in Crow Wing County District Court with two counts of assault and one count of domestic assault.

Mark Anthony Mundem — who is accused of causing head, jaw, arms and rib area injuries to his wife — was charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon; third-degree assault to cause substantial bodily harm and domestic assault; and a misdemeanor to intentionally inflict/attempt to inflict bodily harm on another.

Judge Kristine DeMay set bond/bail at $5,000 with conditions or $60,000 without conditions. She also set Mundem’s next omnibus hearing for April 11.

Mundem was arrested at his residence located on County Road 13, near County Road 137 near Nisswa following a report of a physical domestic. When Crow Wing County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the residence they heard a male and female arguing from the confines of the home. Deputies entered the home and saw the man in possession of a hand gun. Deputies were able to remove Mundem’s wife from the home and she was transported to Essentia Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd for non-life-threatening injuries. She has since been treated and released.

Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl said Mundem was threatening his own life, so deputies backed off and the tactical team was called in to begin negotiations with the man. Negotiations were held and after a period of time Mundem surrendered and was in custody at around 9:50 a.m.

According to the criminal complaint filed against Mundem:

• Crow Wing County Sheriff’s office received a call at 2:27 a.m. from Ms. Mundem, who indicated that her husband, Mundem, assaulted her at their home.

• Ms. Mundem explained to an investigator that she and Mundem had gone out for a couple of drinks earlier Tuesday night and then they went home. She indicated that she consumed approximately a half glass of wine, listened to music and then went to bed. Sometime during the night she awakened to find that her husband had not come to bed. She began looking for him, but could not find him in the house nor the garage. Ms. Mundem told the investigator that the defendant had told her that he had heard a strange beeping noise from outside the residence recently. She told the investigator that she then took a small knife from her purse, put it under her pillow and went to bed.

• Ms. Mundem subsequently was awakened by her husband who had the knife and was yelling and screaming at her. He apparently believed that she had the knife in order to hurt him. At some point, he grabbed the front of her shirt and began to shake her. She indicated that she slapped him and he then threw her to the floor.

• Ms. Mundem then indicated that the defendant hit her with his fist while she was on the floor lying on her back and that he grabbed her head and rammed it into the floor. The defendant again hit her head with his fist and then left the house and went into the garage. Ms. Mundem indicated that she then went to the garage to explain to her husband that she did not have the knife to hurt him. They returned to the house and the defendant was angry and again got into her face. At that point, Ms. Mundem slapped him and the defendant began chasing her around the house ultimately picking up a kitchen chair, hitting her over the head with it. Mundem then used the chair to ram her into the wall at which point, Ms. Mundem called the sheriff’s office. Ms. Mundem told the investigator that as a result of the assault her head, jaw, arms and rib area were all injured. She also suffered cracked ribs.
