A snowmobiler died Sunday after colliding with a train in east Brainerd, the Brainerd Police Department reported.

Emergency personnel were called to the crash about 1:35 p.m. at the railroad tracks under the Highway 25 South bridge in east Brainerd.

Thirty-year-old Michael David Flannigan of Brainerd died shortly after responders arrived.

According to reports, an empty coal train was westbound entering Brainerd when Flannigan, traveling south, approached the tracks and attempted to cross in front of the train. Train operators reported sounding the train horn, but Flannigan continued to attempt to cross the tracks and was broadsided by the train.

Flannigan was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Brainerd Police Department at 829-2805.
