A Grand Rapids student collapsed and later died Thursday during a basketball game at Forestview Middle School.
Baxter Police Department said law enforcement was called to the school at 4:33 p.m. on report of a 12-year-old boy who collapsed during a seventh-grade boys basketball game because of cardiac arrest.
Medical staff in attendance at the game administered CPR, as well as emergency responders. The boy was transported to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Steve Lund, director of business and personnel services for the district, issued a statement about the incident.
“This is a very difficult day,” he said. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the student’s family, as well as with the students and faculty in Grand Rapids Public Schools as they cope with their tragic loss.”
Administrative and counseling staff members informed Forestview Middle School students Friday morning of the incident. A short statement was also sent to Forestview parents.
Grief counseling resources will be available for Forestview Middle School students throughout the day, Lund said.
The name of the student is not being released, pending notification of the family.
