BAARC plans open house
Anyone who is licensed or interested in becoming a radio ham is invited to meet with Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club (BAARC) members at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Brainerd Public Library. Organizers said the free event will be conducted in the Brainerd Public Library’s large meeting room and will include demonstrations, refreshments and fun.
Visitors will learn about the many roles that hams play in providing reliable communications for area public service events as well as in times of disaster when regular systems fail. Demonstrations will show how the Internet and modern technology have enhanced, not replaced, the tools and methods that today’s hams use.
With no age requirement, amateur radio can be a valuable family activity and provide a lifetime of learning opportunities. Since Morse Code is no longer a requirement, ham radio is more accessible than ever, through the club’s night classes. Donated equipment available for sale to club members makes world-wide radio communication possible with minimal expense.
Interested persons may visit the club’s website at www.brainerdham.org.
