Requests by the numbers
➤ Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport — was allocated $157,000 from the county in 2013 and requested a 2 percent increase of $3,140 for $160,140 in 2014. The last increase was 2.6 percent in 2009.
The airport gets 52 percent of its funding from airport-generated revenue at $514,000, 15 percent from a Minnesota Department of Transportation operating grant of $152,000 and 16 percent, or $157,000 each from its two owners the city of Brainerd and Crow Wing County.
The airport reported there are more aircraft based here than any other outstate airport other than Duluth.
Airport-generated revenues rose by $64,000 between 2009 and 2013 for an average of 4.5 percent per year. During the same period, airport operating expenses have risen by $94,000. Salary expense increase averaged 1.6 percent per year since 2009.
➤ Crow Wing Public Transit operates weekdays in the county running three buses at an annual cost of $342,291 with the state Department of Transportation paying 85 percent of the operating costs or $282,540. Crow Wing County’s share of operating costs is $59,751. Fare revenue of $36,000 is deducted from the local share leaving the 2014 local share net of $23,751. With the cost of a replacement bus expected to be $76,000 and the county’s share of that cost at $6,720, the total 2014 county budget request was $30,471.
➤ Cuyuna Lakes Chamber requested funding of $2,000 for 2014 an increase from $1,000 budgeted in 2013.
➤ The Cuyuna Range Community Center, which serves seniors and provides a place for a meal, requested $1,000. The community center appropriation was not previously budgeted.
➤ The Center, formerly the Brainerd Area Senior Activity Center, was budgeted for $20,000, the same as the county provided in 2013 as a new appropriation.
➤ The Brainerd Lakes Area Economic Development Corp. requested a 5 percent increase on the 2013 budget of $44,750 to raise it to $47,000. The Cuyuna Range Economic Development Inc. requested a 4.9 percent increase from $20,300 to $21,300.
