Finance committee passes preliminary 2013-14 budget
The Brainerd School District Finance Committee approved a preliminary budget for the 2013-14 school year at its meeting Friday.
It goes before the school board for final approval.
District staff worked to cut $600,000 in order to make up for a projected deficit.
Attrition was a large part of cost savings, as an unusually high number of staff, almost 40, retire at the end of this year.
Although there is a 1.5 percent increase general education aid from the state, the projected decrease in students creates a problem, said Steve Lund, director of business services for the district.
Next year, there are an estimated 62 fewer students in the district. The biggest factor in that is that the graduating class is far larger than the kindergarten one coming in, Lund said.
