Plans are under way for a Miss Brainerd United States Pageant this summer in Brainerd.
Vicki Randall, a former pageant director for the Miss Brainerd Lakes/Miss Baxter Scholarship Pageants, announced the new pageant this week. She said she wanted to take this pageant in a new direction, placing greater emphasis on the candidates’ interviews.
The Miss Brainerd United States Pageant will be conducted at 7 p.m. June 29 at Tornstrom Auditorium at the Washington Educational Services Building in Brainerd.
Randall said the pageant would serve as a kickoff to the Brainerd-Baxter Fourth of July celebration.
Half of the candidate’s score will relate to interviews (private interview-25 percent and on-stage question-25 percent). The remainder of the score will be compiled from swimsuit (25 percent) and evening gown (25 percent) competitions.
There will be no talent competition, Randall said, opening up the opportunity to participate to more young women. In a news release Randall said the pageant will emphasize interview skills which prepare the candidates for future job interviews and other life skills.
Randall said the Miss United States competition is an at-large competition and Brainerd would be the first locally based Minnesota pageant to be represented in that organization. The winner will go on to represent Brainerd in the 2014 Miss Minnesota United States Pageant next February.
The first informational meeting for the Brainerd competition is 6 p.m. April 30 in the Brainerd High School South Campus Media Center. More information on the Brainerd pageant may be obtained by calling Randall at 851-4808.
The ages and categories of competition are: Junior Teen, ages 13-15; Teen, ages 16-19; and Miss, ages 20-29. The competition is open to young women who live within the boundaries of the Brainerd School District or who attend school in the Brainerd School District.
Randall said that she learned about the Miss Minnesota United States program as she followed the success of Mary Elizabeth Peterson of Nisswa, who was crowned Miss Minnesota United States in February of 2013.
“We found we could take pageants here in Brainerd in a new direction by eliminating the talent portion and focusing more on the interview skills,” she said in a statement.
“The state pageant is an at-large program, open to any girl within the state of Minnesota. Our local Miss Brainerd pageant will be the first local pageant in the state.”
She said her 10 years of pageant experience has prepared her for her role as director of this new venture.
