Two suspects, sought in an alleged drive-by shooting in Mille Lacs County, fled in a truck across Mille Lacs Lake Thursday night.
No details of the reported shooting, believed to have happened near the Grand Casino Mille Lacs and to have injured one person, were immediately available. But law enforcement scanner reports began about 5 p.m. as squad cars searched for the vehicle.
Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl said one of his deputies came up behind the suspect vehicle in Garrison to make a stop when the truck left the road and escaped across the frozen Mille Lacs Lake.
Officers and deputies from numerous agencies were scanning the unpredictable ice for signs of the truck, noting large cracks in the ice surface and ice heaves could create considerable obstacles for a vehicle traveling at speed at night without the aid of headlights. Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Department sought assistance from Aitkin and Crow Wing County in contacting resorts around the lake to inform them of the suspect vehicle, described as a gray and maroon truck.
Dahl said he was informed the suspects were believed to be armed with a 9 mm handgun. A Department of Natural Resources pilot was called in to assist with the search for the vehicle.
Later in the night, a truck matching the vehicle description was reportedly found on the lake with two sets of footprints leading away. No weapon was found with the vehicle and a K9 unit was called to help find the male suspect, or suspects. Nearing 9 p.m., the suspect was still believed to be at large, Dahl said.
Dahl said apparently the suspect was an individual law enforcement was looking for the day before related to a separate incident.
