President Barack Obama stands with Vice President Joe Biden as he makes a statement in this Dec. 19, 2012 file photo taken in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, about policies he will pursue following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Ct.

Proposals for curbing gun violence announced Wednesday by President Barack Obama:

NEEDS CONGRESSIONAL ACTION:

— Requiring background checks on all gun sales. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says 40 percent of gun sales are conducted with no criminal background check, such as at gun shows and by private sellers over the Internet or through classified ads. Obama said there should be exceptions for cases like certain transfers among family members and temporary transfers for hunting purposes.

— Reinstating the assault weapons ban. A 10-year ban on high-grade, military-style weapons expired in 2004. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., says such a ban might clear the Senate but doubts it could get through the House.

— Renewing a 10-round limit on the size of ammunition magazines.

— Prohibiting the possession, transfer, manufacture and import of dangerous armor-piercing bullets.

— Senate confirmation of a director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The agency has been run by an acting director, Todd Jones, whom Obama will nominate to become director.

— New gun trafficking laws penalizing people who help criminals get guns.

__

EXECUTIVE ORDER:

— Address legal barriers in health laws that bar some states from making available information about people who are prohibited from having guns.

— Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

— Make sure that federal agencies share relevant information with the background check system.

— Direct the attorney general to work with other agencies to review existing laws to make sure they can identify individuals who shouldn't have access to guns.

— Direct the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other research agencies to conduct research into the causes and prevention of gun violence.

— Clarify that no federal law prohibits doctors or other health care providers from contacting authorities when patients threaten to use violence.

— Give local communities the opportunity to hire up to 1,000 school resource officers and counselors.

— Require federal law enforcement to trace all recovered guns.

— Propose regulations that will enable law enforcement to run complete background checks before returning firearms that have been seized.

— Direct the Justice Department to analyze information on lost and stolen guns and make that information available to law enforcement.

— Provide training for state and local law enforcement, first responders and school officials on how to handle active-shooter situations.

— Make sure every school has a comprehensive emergency management plan.

— Help ensure that young people get needed mental health treatment.

— Ensure that health insurance plans cover mental health benefits.

— Encourage development of new technology to make it easier for gun owners to safely use and store their guns.

— Have the Consumer Product Safety Commission assess the need for new safety standards for gun locks and gun safes.

— Launch a national campaign about responsible gun ownership.

Edison,

How is your healthcare controlled by the government? Don't you have private health insurance, private doctors, and private medical clinics and hospitals?

Obamacare Rebates - Thank You

- Health insurance companies have to pay out a total of $1.1 billion in rebates.

- About 12.8 million Americans will receive a rebate, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

- The average privately insured family will see a $151 rebate from this provision, but payouts will vary by state.

- About 31 percent of Americans who have individual insurance are eligible for a rebate. They’ll get their checks directly in the mail, averaging about $127, according to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Thank You Mr. President, keep on doing NOTHING for us!

Cut Taxes, thank you

Wow, bond, you must be the only person in America that had their paycheck go up this month. That makes one in 700,000,000 that had their taxes cut. I hope you enjoy it.
Meanwhile the rest of us have smaller paychecks, pay twice the price for Gas, Peanut butter, bread has gone up $.50 a loaf, beef, has doubled in price the last few years.
Thank God for all the relief. You can keep the relief, I will just take my freedom, relief is to expensive for me when peanut butter sandwiches have become a luxury, forget the jelly.

Do you know why your taxes went up?

The TEMPORARY CUT in the social security rate expired.

My check went up, by the way! We seniors got a cost of living adjustment again this year after a two year freeze in 2010 and 2011.

Thank you, Mr. President.

southie11,

When the Government requires you to purchase "private" government approved insurance, or take the public Government insurance, your healthcare is controlled by government.
When the Government requires a Catholic hospital to perform medical procedures that are against religious beliefs. Or to force "private" insurers to pay for medical procedures that are against their religious beliefs, you healthcare is government controlled.
Private medical providers have the freedom to provide the type of care that they believe in, and you as a client would have the freedom to decide wether or not you agreed or wanted to find another provider.
Private insurers have the freedom to not cover certain procedures that violate their religious beliefs and you as a free citizen should have the freedom to select a private insurer that matches your beliefs.

I have private supplements

to Medicare and select the plans I want.

Some are still using their religion to try to control those who don't share their beliefs. Don't use what you don't believe in, but don't think your fellow workers agree with you and want you to determine what coverage they have.

And most companies don't pay 100% of employee's premiums. So should they control the content of the policy?

Most people don't agree with you, Edison. We want medical freedom, to do privately what we want to regarding our health without our employer's knowledge or interference.

Government Approved Insurance?

"When the Government requires you to purchase "private" government approved insurance, or take the public Government insurance, your healthcare is controlled by government."

Really? You are required to buy govt. approved health care? You can not keep your private insurance? My BC/[filtered word] policy is govt. approved? Do we have a Public Option and I was not aware of it?

Now if I was a veteran and I was going to the VA services, then I agree that would be your govt. approved healthcare. Do veterans want to give up their govt. approved healthcare?

If I was a senior and I was using Medicare, then I agree that would be govt. approved healthcare. Do seniors want to give up their govt. approved healthcare?

So, why did the Insurance companies back Obamacare? Because those private insurers would be getting millions of new customers. Sounds like capitalism to me, not the socialism you are implying.

Circumcisions are not covered

Circumcisions are not covered by most medical insurers. That is because they are either a voluntary procedure or a religious decision.
That is an example of insurers allowing people to make their own decisions on religious and personal medical procedures. No one makes any stink about that.
But now, the American Government, is telling people that it doesn't matter what you believe you MUST provide voluntary procedures, you MUST provide birth control or abortions.
That is not freedom, that is one persons beliefs being forced on another person. before, you could choose what to believe. Now one persons religion is being forced on another. In this case I use the term religion as a set of beliefs and not necessary a belief in God. Belief or lack there of is being forced on us and if we refuse, we are fined, and become criminal.

I guess we all have our

I guess we all have our price. Personally I believe there are some things that go beyond just my bottom line. There are some things worth sacrificing for.
America was founded on only a couple core sets of beliefs. A Government was setup with as many safeguards and protections as our forefathers could foresee to ensure that we would never again have our basic rights of freedom jeopardized.
It seems lately so many people have been willing to sacrifice that freedom over the promise of a few comforts. This is a government of the people by the people and for the people. This county is great because we stand as a people, not just a government. This government was founded so the people could stand independent and not dependent on the government. A government shouldn't be just about getting as much as you can for as cheap as possible.

Stand Independent? At What Price?

The image of rugged individualism is uniquely American, but in practice what is the reality?

Before Medicare and SS seniors suffered economically and medically. If you were elderly and could not get or afford health insurance and you got sick, what were your options? Charity? Family? Emergency Room? ...?

So are Medicare and SS a couple of "comforts"?

Independence is a hollow concept when you are sick and need medical assistance and have a pre-existing condition. Even if you could find insurance it would be very expensive.

So, be very careful what you wish for Edison.

From welfare to Medicare?
What a career change and I bet she keeps the same case worker.
As for southie, make up your mind. First you brag about your retirement increasing and next you say "We want medical freedom, to do privately what we want to regarding our health without our employer's knowledge or interference."
Are you double-dipping lady?

What I wish for is that

What I wish for is it was legal for me to pay my own health costs and not pay inflated rates to insurance companies. No, that is against the law.
Being sick is no comparison against being oppressed. How many people were willing to die for the freedoms that we have today? How many people have died so that we could help deliver those same freedoms to other nations?
I am not saying we don't have an obligation to care for those who can't care for themselves. Just that we also have an obligation to preserve the freedoms that came at such a high cost.

Edison

Circumcision is covered by many insurers, United Health, Cigna, Medica, Medicaid, and Medicare (adults do have the surgery, too) to name a few.

I would prefer the people with whom I come in contact to have health insurance and to use it when they are sick.

Find a policy with a $5,000 per person deductible to save money.

southie11,

thank you for making my point, health insurers should have the option to cover what you they choose to believe is in the best interest of their customers.
You should have the option to choose your plan or choose to pay out of pocket as you please.

Whats with the personal attacks? Seriously does my opinion offend you? Will you stand as strong for the 1st amendment as you do for the second? I will not launch a personal attack against you. I will simply say after reading the article the new rules that our government would like to have put in place does not deny one the right to own a gun. It just makes it more difficult to get one. What is wrong with more thorough background checks? You can still own a gun. Yes it may be a step toward a gun ban, but guess what it is not a gun ban.

Empty plans from empty suits

" Direct the attorney general to work with other agencies to review existing laws to make sure they can identify individuals who shouldn't have access to guns'

In other words , tell someone or other to do something or other. What a leader! O' bama and Biden are totally inept and they disgrace the offices they occupy. Thanks for nothing, Barry &Joe
