Highway 371 to be targeted during ice fishing contest
NISSWA — Towards Zero Deaths (TZD) overtime shifts for driving while intoxicated (DWI) enforcement are scheduled Saturday, targeting Highway 371 from Baxter to Walker during the 23rd annual Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza held Gull Lake’s Gull Lake’s Hole-in-the-Day Bay.
The Minnesota State Patrol is urging motorists to buckle up, drive at safe speeds, pay attention and plan in advance for a sober ride. Motorists are encouraged to be very careful driving through the Nisswa area near Gull Lake during the event. The busiest times for traffic will be in the morning until noon, and again at 3 p.m. through the early night time.
“This area has been selected as the primary enforcement zone due to the anticipated influx of motorists traveling to and from the area for the event, ” State Patrol Lt. Joe Dwyer said in a news release. “Make smart decisions behind the wheel and don’t take the risk of driving impaired.”
Troopers will be working with several other local agencies to direct traffic in several locations near the event as well as providing additional support of extra troopers looking for impaired drivers and other violations.
The extra shifts will be assigned to troopers who would normally be on a scheduled day off, with the intention of increasing trooper complement for this special event,” says Dwyer.
