Sauk Rapids teen to be tried as adult in fatal punch death
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — A judge has certified a 17-year-old boy to stand trial as an adult in the death of a college student who was punched in a St. Cloud alley.
Prosecutors have charged Jesse Jean Smithers of Sauk Rapids with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault.
Smithers appeared in adult court Monday. A judge set unconditional bail at $1 million or conditional bail at $500,000.
A complaint accuses Smithers of jumping out of a car on Sept. 20 and punching 20-year-old Colton Gleason once in the face.
Gleason fell backward and hit his head. The Minnesota State University, Mankato student later died.
The St. Cloud Times (http://bit.ly/UD7ohq) reports Smithers has denied having anything to do with the attack on Gleason.
A message left for Smithers' attorney was not immediately returned Monday.
