Two Brainerd High School teenagers were crowned as queens Sunday.

Serena Schreifels, 16, was crowned 2013 Miss Brainerd Lakes Outstanding Teen and Lizzy Thurlow, 15, was crowned Miss Central Lakes Outstanding Teen.

Schreifels is the daughter of Troy and Julie Schreifels. Thurlow is the daughter of Marie Thurlow.

In the Miss Brainerd Lakes contest, Catie Kleindl, the daughter of Mike and Ann Kleindl, was named first runner-up. Karrina Myhre, the daughter of Mark Myhre and Kris Kolstad, won the Spirit Award. The Spirit Award is voted on by the contestants as they choose the teenager who brought the most energy and fun to the pageant experience.

Pam Wachholz, scholarship pageant board member and mother of former Miss Brainerd Lakes Outstanding Teen Bailey Wachholz who went on to be Miss Minnesota’s Outstanding Teen, said both the crowned teenagers had phenomenal talents and spoke well on stage. Schreifels sang and Thurlow played the flute. “It was the poise and the confidence for 15- and 16-year-old,” Wachholz said of what helped the winning contestants stand out.

Six area teens were set to compete Sunday in the Miss Brainerd Lakes Outstanding Teen Pageant and four were competing in the Miss Central Lakes Outstanding Teen Pageant, which was hosted at Central Lakes College. Both programs are part of the Miss Minnesota and Miss America Scholarship organizations.

In the Miss Central Lakes pageant, Sage Hovet, the daughter of Randy and JoAnn Hovet, was first runner-up.

Miss Brainerd Lakes pageants are open to all girls from the Brainerd, Pequot Lakes, Pillager and Crosby-Ironton school districts. The Miss Central Lakes pageant is open to any girl within the state of Minnesota who qualifies under the Miss America Scholarship Organization.

Contestants competed in lifestyle and fitness in active wear, talent, evening gown and on-stage question in the pageant. Each queen receives a $500 college scholarship and first runners-up receive $200 college scholarships, among other prizes. Cyndi Kalenberg is the pageant director.
