Minnesota’s 8th District Congressman-elect Rick Nolan has appointed five staff members with Minnesota ties to help anchor his congressional staff.
Among the appointments is former Duluth City Council President Jeff Anderson, who was an opponent of Nolan’s in the 2012 DFL primary. Anderson will serve as district director, overseeing congressional offices planned for Duluth and Brainerd, as well as Iron Range and southern locations yet to be determined. An Ely native and fourth generation Iron Ranger, Anderson also served as president of the Duluth Economic Development Authority and was named a “20 under 40” award winner by the Duluth News Tribune for his contributions to the Duluth area.
Onamia native Jim Swiderski will be Nolan’s Washington D.C. legislative director, responsible for day-to-day supervision of legislative initiatives and working with various congressional committees and senior legislative staff in other offices. During Nolan’s previous congressional service (1975-1981), Swiderski served as staff director for the House Subcommittee on Family Farms and Rural Development, which Nolan chaired. He has worked extensively in the U.S. and abroad for international volunteer service organizations.
Jodie Torkelson of Thief River Falls, MN, will be Nolan’s deputy chief of staff in Washington D.C. A former Thief River Falls city administrator, Torkelson was a top aide to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta when he (Panetta) served as President Bill Clinton’s White House chief of staff. She also worked for Panetta during his time on Capitol Hill as a U.S. Congressman from California.
Ione Yates of Clarissa will be Nolan’s chief scheduler. Yates, who served Nolan in the same position in Washington D.C. from 1975-1981, later spent more than 20 years in consumer and customer relations for Canon USA. She has done extensive volunteer work in Africa, focusing on AIDS prevention, assistance to abused women and childhood education.
Steve Johnson of Red Wing will be Nolan’s communications director. A former director of communications for ex-U.S. Rep. Gerry Sikorski, D-Minn., and the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, Johnson served as Nolan’s press secretary during his previous time on Capitol Hill. He will leave his position as senior counselor at Ainsley Shea Communications in St. Paul for the new post.
“These senior staffers possess decades of combined experience in public service, business and volunteer work,” Nolan said. “They know Minnesota, they know Capitol Hill and they will hit the ground running to provide exemplary service to the people of the 8th District from day one,” Nolan said.

what are their salaries?
Did you ask Chip?
Same answer.
FNB: Here's a ballpark guestimate, based on salaries of
out-going staffers, Cravaack's office. http://www.legistorm.com/member/2766/Rep_Chip_Cravaack.html
Good Luck Rick Nolan working with the 113th Congress !
Since the " worst congress in history" ( 112th) will be remembered for their GOP endorsed 30 or 40 wasted votes to indicate their " disapproval " of Health Care Reform and other pressing fiscal issues like birth control , and wrecking the credit rating of the USA , there may be hope on the horizon.
The(some) republicons in the US House have (suddenly) come to understand that the " Bush Tax Cuts " and a couple unfunded wars going on for 10 years may have actually helped create a rather large debt !
Dont forget to ask the Chipster were he parked your official rental car , and where he left the keys.
Thank You Bubba for
the info. I will compare them as soon as there is data available from Rep.Nolan's staff.
Southie and Lil'Cappy, I asked a legitimate question and you two rolled out the Looney Left snark so rasberries to you both. We'll see if it's the same answer.
Some people just can't get
Some people just can't get over Chip. They won't have him
to kick around anymore. Or will they? They still blame
Bush. I still have hope they can move on.
They always forget to take their tolerance pills for the day.
Funny I don't recall anyone
Wondering about congressional aides salaries for the last two years. But it is a good question. You are a little too sensitive this year already, FNB.
Chip who?
I also wish Mr. Nolan well!
With the passage of the "Fiscal Cliff" bill I understand that the CBO estimates that it will add $4 trillion to the decifit over the next 10 years. It's my sincere hope that the President and Congress will do something to eliminate the ever increasing decifit. As someone with an economics background I cannot see how this country can continue on this path without massive cuts and increased revenues across the board. People often point to the high tax rates of the Eisenhower administration on the wealthy but they fail to mention that 90% of the workforce paid income tax at the 15% rate or higher. We need not only to cut spending but we are going to need tax increases on everyone!
We need the 47%
to start paying Federal Taxes if they aren't retired taxpayers that did.
You're welcome, FnB
When you make your comparison, I'll be curious to know if anyone on Nolan's "transition team" gets paid as much as former Sen. Rod Grams got paid to help Chip get up and running. Grams picked up a pretty sweet gubment paycheck (something he and his wife/former staffer Chris Gunhus Grams were quite accustomed to doing!) for a little bit of work early in Cravaack's term. I'll be checking in on that, also, after first quarter salary stats are published!
Okay, FnB. Some Sen's or Rep's want gov't.
small enough to "drown in a bathtub"; they're often also the first to have their own hand extended to fill their ample bank accounts from the gov't coffers. That's annoying.
That's me in the video, if you make me mad!
Hide and watch!
Here she goes again.
Bachman, whose proposed bills never go anywhere, just submitted one to overturn the Health Care Act. Wonder if any of her proposed legislation ever passes.
I Rick Nolan
Will Vote for PAY raises for my staff and myself.
Congress granted $900 a year pay raise
by fiscal cliff deal. First since 2010. It's a done deal, pickle. Before the new Congress convened.
