Crow Wing County deputy Bryan Vieths has not been back to work since being injured in the three-vehicle crash Dec. 20 at the intersection of Laurel and Southwest Fourth streets in Brainerd.
The Minnesota State Patrol, the agency that investigated the crash, reported that Vieths, 36, Pillager, had a “non-specifically known medical situation” that caused the crash.
Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl said that Veiths has been to the doctor and has gone through tests on his medical condition.
“He is one of our senior deputies and a vital part of our office,” said Dahl. “We want him healthy. He has not returned to work yet.”
Dahl said that alcohol was not involved in the crash that was reported at 1:24 p.m.
The state patrol reported that Vieths was driving west on Laurel Street in a marked Ford Crow Wing County Sheriff vehicle, when it rear-ended a blue Hyundai driven by Tonya Wermager, 23, Nisswa. Wermager had a cut lip and refused treatment by first responders, reported the state patrol.
It was reported that the squad proceeded west on a sidewalk and struck a Ford Super Duty truck, which was facing south on Fourth Street Southwest. The truck was driven by Robert Mueller, 25, Brainerd. Mueller also refused treatment by first responders.
The Brainerd Fire Department had to extricate Vieths from the squad car. He was transported by North Ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, was held overnight only for testing and observation and was released the next day.

Did you know that the Sherriff does not give ins. info at an accident?, that the victims have to call repeatedly to get a copy of the accident report and the ins. info? Or here's the kicker.... that their ins. Co. didn't even know about the accident 2 weeks after the fact and have now taken the position that because it may have been a "medical problem" it's not their "fault"? WTH??? An innocent girl with a 5 month old baby in the car gets rear-ended by an officer at a stop sign at a high speed, bites thru her lip, gets stitches, not to mention the life scared out of her....and it's not "their fault"? Now I don't know about you, but when I'm in an accident.... insurance info is the first thing exchanged, there is no "hunting" the other down for it? And if I rear-end someone, it's my fault! Why is it any different for them?????
