Soda shop rebuked for stocking candy smokes

Posted: December 26, 2012 - 2:34pm

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Owners of an old-school soda shop in St. Paul, Minn., are being warned to kick the habit and stop stocking novelty candy cigarettes.

City inspectors threatened a misdemeanor citation and $500 fine if Lynden's soda fountain is caught selling the fake smokes again. The Star Tribune reported Wednesday (http://bit.ly/RiCHiP ) that the offering violated an ordinance barring the sale of candy smokes and cartoon character lighters.

A city spokesman says the warning came after inspectors received and looked into a complaint about the presence of the tobacco-themed products. The ordinance was enacted to discourage youngsters from picking up a real smoking habit.

Shop owner Tobi Lynden says the white candy sticks with the red tips were her best-selling candy item but she pulled them to avoid running afoul of the ordinance.

NYC

Can you imagine the trouble you would be in NYC if you didn't register your toy gun, pretend smoking a candy cig, and drinking a 16 ounce soda?

Talk abut getting in the way of an individual.

Nan

Agree with you. I liked the candy cigs and didn't fake smoke
as my parents didn't smoke. I think the fact that a kid's parent smokes has a bigger effect than a candy cig.

I was depraved as I never had a candy necklace.

I prefer to wear the real ones.

Candy Cigs

My brother and I pretended to smoke and ate those things as a kid. They were really good. We also grew up being non-smokers. Maybe they should put a ban on gummy worms. I would hate to have my grandchildren think it was ok to eat worms. Seems like the "ban" everything mentality is working overtime everywhere!

All it took was candy cigs

All it took was candy cigs to finally get a topic where all the posters agree with each other! I think I'll send a couple packs to Boehner and Obama. Problem solved.

Hey you guys!!

I'm not ashamed to tell my age. I'm 52. OFB you dork. You want some hot candle wax? You need a new wick? Didn't think so. (yuck, yuck, yuck)
I know I should quit smoking, but like you, I don't wanna gain weight and I don't want a divorce. Total witch or a sniveling mess. In March they are having hypnosis to stop smoking and weight loss. Both sessions $90.00 or $50.00 if you want one or the other. It's at Pine River School. Seen it in the PR/B Community Education.
Worth it, doncha think?

I know it doesn't work for everyone but I used the pills and it worked great. Main thing is you really have to want to quit for anything to work.
I did the patches, Zyban, acupuncture but nothing worked until I got it in my head that I was done. A few extra pounds is better than what cigs. did to me. Two surgeries for blocked arteries had a lot to do with making up my mind.
