Man shoots granddaughter, mistakes her for intruder

Posted: December 11, 2012 - 12:02pm

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) — Rochester police say a grandfather shot and critically wounded his teenage granddaughter after mistaking her for an intruder.

Authorities say the man and his wife were asleep and awoke to a noise outside about 11 p.m. Monday. The man grabbed his handgun and told his wife to call police as he went to investigate.

Capt. Brian Winters says the grandfather saw a figure at the back door and fired at least two shots. The figure was actually the man's 16-year-old granddaughter, who he thought was inside the house. The teen had recently been living with her grandparents. She was hit once in the upper torso.

The Post-Bulletin (http://bit.ly/T4T2FN ) reports the 61-year-old grandfather told police there had been a recent burglary at a nearby recreation center and that was on his mind when he went to investigate the noise.

Another

Another example of shoot first, regret later.
He could have easily asked who was out there.
She would have said 'It's me grandpa."
He wouldn't have fired and she wouldn't be dead.
Gun happy people!
If Grandma was on the phone calling the cops then Grandpa could have waited. Bet the cops wouldn't have opened fire on her before asking what she was doing.

@ nanlee60

She Isn't dead, She is in critical condition "Preliminary reports from medical staff indicate she'll survive her injuries" it says this in the article from the link in this article. The Dispatch should be more clear when they report things. Hope she gets better soon.

A big mistake

This is senseless. I would hope you could turn on the outside light and see.... maybe.. He thought she was home at the time. He and his wife must feel really really bad.

I totally agree you, Nan.

That is why you tell your grandparents you are going out or don't sneak out -- they might mistake you for an intruder.

Accepting responsibility

NanLee60, good job of setting a good example and accepting responsibility for your error. I hope more posters follow that example.

Where

are you people who supported the guy in Little Falls? Isn't the granddaughter at fault here? Didn't she get what she deserved? Shoot first, right?

It seems a little premature to assign blame, wouldn't you say?

Old man, scared that bad guys with guns are at the door?

Is stupid the same as scared? Do you get the same buzz thinking about punishment for scared as you do for stupid? Or are we all the way past either one to raving lunatic?

I didn't see any evidence of any of these in the articles, but it did say the legal system is doing its thing. As they should.

Two Idiots

Two idiots posting on the same subject. I think it's time to let motley and eyolf have this subject to themselves.

eyolf posted a trumped up picture

he probably painted himself and got the whole subject and his hate-filled post pulled, the last time he was on here. He's really gone to the dark side lately.

Not just Larry

Larry's allright; cutting and incisive, as well as usually quite intelligent. I prize a rapier wit.

Wildly, blindly swinging a cudgel earns few points.

I hope a few people saw the comparison between Hansen's editorials and mindless graffiti before it was pulled, lest it embarass someone. At least the mindless graffiti is gone...

No, not really. Just like pretty much everyone I've stooped to childish posts mostly designed to tweak a few tempers.

I've pretty much given up on reasoned discussion here.

No muttley,

eyolf's nasty deception was far above your comprehension level. He posted a picture depicting a hateful "graffiti" painted on a guard rail. In the background were mountain bikers so maybe they helped him do it. The BDD shut it down immediately. eyolf wasn't being funny, he was trying to insinuate that a non-liberal actually painted that hateful message on that guardrail. eyolf was trying to frame innocent people. eyolf has shown that his morals are lacking and the BDD should have suspended him from commenting if not banned him totally.
His response: "I've pretty much given up on reasoned discussion here."
OK eyolf, GET OUT OF HERE!
Denton, BDD or Mr. Hanson.
This guy eyolf, stepped over the line and admitted it.

Wow, F-n-B.

Take a deep breath, buddy.

I was trying to imply that Hansen's editorials are no more than graffiti. I guess a third party chose to make his words even more ephemeral than something left to sun, wind and rain. It was the cyclists ignoring the graffiti that told the story.

Motley's original post here ...

... was entirely appropriate. His use of sarcasm effectively illustrates just how stupid, careless and paranoid the shooter's actions were. Hopefully a few eyes will be opened to avoid more of these tragedies in the future.

More tragedy and Hand Wringing.....

Couple the above article with the assult rifle killings in Oregon just yesterday and you have more examples to add to the list of needed assult rifle and handgun control...yes, control. Too many people have uncontrolled access to assult rifles and handguns. In many cases, these people are clueless as to proper care and use of these weapons. The "God" of the weapons' industry, the National Rifle Assn., continues to promote access to these weapons which kill 31,000 Americans each year. The NRA takes no responsibility whatever for their wanton promotion of unlimited access to these weapons by any and all. Why?....it is because they are feed at the trough of the ammunition and weapons manufacturers.

I guess what most bothers

I guess what most bothers you, fnb, are people who can think for themselves. You are extreme right wing, who's answer to life is Rush Limbaugh. Whenever you can't answer with any resemblance of intelligence, you resort to name calling, or cry to the moderator about how unfair another post is. After the election, tell me, hows that right wing thing working for you? Before you start crying liberal, try to understand that some of us are quite capable of formulating an opinion, without walking the party line. Everything in your world is either conservative or liberal, how confining that must be.

Two idiots and a mouthpiece

You ask how's that right wing thing working for us after the election? Well, pretty good in CWC. We literally kicked your butt. CWC was solid conservative in this last election. We kicked liberal butt. However, the two idiots and a mouthpiece seem to be taking pride in someone elses accomplishments elsewhere in this state and country. Using the accomplishments of other liberals to support your own cause just shows the scope of your intelligence. You're all liberal losers here in CWC. Especially you two idiots and your mouthpiece. (motley, eyolf and southie). You want to read intelligent conversation, stop posting on this website and read what others have to say. There's not enough brains between the three of you to fill the head of a newborn. And even if there was, a newborns brains are semi-developed, unlike yours. Finally: GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE. If this guy didn't have a gun, he would have used a knife or another weapon. Was this senseless, yes. Was it necessary, no. Then why did he do it? Because law enfrocement and the legal beagles have allowed our system to become over-run with criminals and man has no other alternative but to take these kinds of steps. Until we have capital punishment, these things will continue to happen as long as people feel the need to defend themselves. If felons were put in front of a firing squad in the metro-dome and tickets to the event were sold, to help support better law enforcement and legal-eze, things like this will continue to happen. If you ever had the intentions of committing a felony, watching an event like this would certainly go a long way to deterring you. Heck, I'd pay $100 bucks to see a convicted felon get his brains blown out. Multiply that by 60,000seats in the metro-dome, we would be out of debt in no time, unless the libs taxed it. Now, if you think this post is crazy and radical, you now know what we have to read every time you three post.

What's your opinion on Michigan?

What do the people in Michigan think about the last election?
They are looking forward to some jobs coming in their state.
They want the unemployment numbers to decrease.

Of course, there is that certain city of Detroit that is going
bankrupt and has lost jobs and about a million city taxpayers.
Then there is the Detroit city council and their bacon needs

The union protestors are showing that if they don't get their way, they fight. Great.
