20 years ago (1992)

A drive may be under way to remove Cheryl Gelbmann from the county board because of an incident relating to County Attorney Jack Graham’s budget appeal. Jim Morgan left a petition at the auditor’s office and picked up forms to gather signatures to support it.

30 years ago (1982)

As was happening in many households around the area last night, dinner was being prepared and the noise from the TV blended in with the voices. This was the scene at Baxter Group Home, a new, home-style residence for 12 people with developmental disabilities.

40 years ago (1972)

Brainerd Golden Gloves boxers won three bouts and lost five in action at Cass Lake. Fighting in the main event, Al Houck defeated Louie Dunn of Fargo using a hard left and an occasional good right. Also winning were Monte Palmer and Chris Kelm.

60 years ago (1952)

Walter Wieland, senior member of the law firm of Wieland and Alderman, has been named to the board of Minnesota Power and Light Co. He is a graduate of Washington High School and the Univ. of Minn. Wieland was county attorney from 1923 to 1928.

80 years ago (1932)

Tiny hands will be kept warm for the less fortunate children of Brainerd and the county under a new and generous program under way here. Manufacturing of 1,000 pairs of mittens is being donated by Hickerson Garment Factory and their employees.

100 years ago (1912)

Harry Whitman, accused of 2nd degree grand larceny and who escaped while on bail, was located in Alexandria by Deputy Sheriff Claus Theorin and returned to Brainerd. It shows the success Sheriff Reid and associates are having in tracing such wanted persons.
