In this Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012 photo, wreckage lies on the road from a fatal accident on the east side of U.S. 61, south of the County 21 intersection, and north of the Wacouta Road exit in Goodhue County, Minn. More than a foot of snow fell in the Twin Cities Sunday.

A snow storm beginning Saturday night and continuing through Sunday evening painted the lakes area white but according to the National Weather Service in Duluth, it will be the only snow for awhile.

“It’s looking like it will taper off tonight (Sunday) and we won’t have anything major until possibly next weekend (Dec. 22),” said Dean Packingham, senior meteorologist at National Weather Service — Duluth.

Packingham said the amount of snow varied across the state, with reports of 6 inches in Leader, 5 inches in Motley and 3.7 inches in Pillager as of Sunday afternoon.

South of Brainerd saw more snow according to Packingham. The Twin Cities had 5-11 inches reported and Sacred Heart in Rendville reported 17.3 inches as of 2 p.m. on Sunday.

In Brainerd, 5 inches of snow was reported at 4:30 p.m. Law enforcement responded to several reports of vehicles in ditches throughout the Brainerd area.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported difficult driving conditions on highways throughout the Brainerd area. MnDOT also reported a crash at Highway 210 and Crow Wing County Road 30 in Crosby.

The winter storm warning covering most of central Minnesota was set to expire Sunday night. A blizzard warning was out for much of eastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota.

The National Weather Service reported 15.5 inches at Sacred Heart and 12 inches in Montevideo in southwestern Minnesota and more than 8 inches in Aberdeen, S.D., by late morning. Reports of 5 to 8 inches were common across the Twin Cities area around midday.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported difficult driving conditions across much of the southern two-thirds of the state, with no travel advised in the Willmar area of west-central Minnesota. MnDOT spokesman Kevin Gutknecht said the agency pulled its plows off the roads in the Granite Falls, Madison, Marshall and Montevideo areas of southwestern Minnesota until conditions improve.

Kandiyohi County Deputy Todd Neumann said plows were having difficulty keeping up with the snow.

“Snow, snow and more snow,” Neumann said.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported about 300 crashes statewide from Saturday night through noon Sunday, with more than 30 involving injuries, but no fatalities. Lt. Eric Roeske also reported more than 300 spinouts or vehicles off the road.

Minneapolis, St. Paul, several suburban communities and St. Cloud declared snow emergencies, meaning parking restrictions will be in effect until the streets are plowed.

More than 150 flights at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport were canceled due to the storm, airport spokesman Pat Hogan said. Delta Air Lines, the airport’s main carrier, said travelers through the Twin Cities and Duluth could rebook their flights without charge. The Federal Aviation Administration said the snow was delaying some flights by an average of about 90 minutes.

The Metrodome looked only about three-quarters full at kickoff for the sold-out Bears-Vikings game, as the drive into downtown Minneapolis clearly took longer than usual for many of the fans. They continued to stream in late, with beads of melting snow apparent on everyone’s jackets.

In South Dakota, officials closed Interstate 90 between Chamberlain and Sioux Falls and Intestate 29 from Sioux Falls to Sisseton because of blizzard conditions.

Baxter Shines Again

It looks like the City of Baxter leadership committee has come through again. While the businesses along both sides of hwy 371 (frontage roads) spent valuable dollars yesterday to keep their parking lots clear of snow for their customers, the city of Baxter stayed home. From Fleet Farm to Menards on one side and Cub Foods to Famous Daves on the other side, not one flake of snow was removed yesterday, all day. These businesses pay great amonts of taxes and deserve to be treated better than that for their money. They should all band together and demand tax cuts or a downward adjustment. It is the peak holiday season and has been a gloomy year for most of these businesses and for the city of Baxter to treat them like that is criminal. While the country moved on, Baxter stayed home. Not only was this a great dis-service to these businesses, but it also inconvenienced many citizens who use their weekends to shop during these holiday seasons. Just one more incident of many this past few years, that demonstrates a great lack of leadership and abuse of taxpayers dollars in the city of Baxter.

And Brainerd also.

PDNET 15. I didn't make it through Baxter so I don't know what Brainerd looked like but I bet I could agree with you and probably be right. The entire weekend in our area was pathetic. You know what we're going to hear. Short of help, no money, not enough taxes, didn't want to pay overtime etc. The real answer we'll never hear from them. Well, here's the real answer: Lack of leadership at the city council/mayoral level. We've done it in past years with less money, fewer employees, less equipment and a lot more snow. I'm with you 100% on this one PD

snow storm?

The area has gone soft. What they now call a "snow storm" wouldn't even get a mention in the paper 25 years ago. The only thing you would have heard would of been "Oh-we got a little snow last night".

Southie Runs her mouth again.

Southie: open mouth, insert foot. If you don't know what your talking about, you should probably keep your big mouth shut.
I happen to live in CROW WING COUNTY and I have family members that work along the Baxter/371 frontage roads.

Another Illiterate-Oh No

Sounds like the libs have found another illiterate idiot to post for them. Who the (filtered word) is Snicks. Just by reading the few posts here today, it sounds like someone that hasn't had an education yet. Hey snicks, sell your computer before you hurt yourself. Use the money to take a class at the alternative ed school if you can get in.

SML

Ya Think. I think she thinks I live in Pine River. Maybe she was just jerking me around a little. There have been a lot of jerks on here lately. Oh well, it is the holiday season. I guess I should be a little more forgiving. Merry Christmas/Xmas/Happy Holidays or whatever is correct, for you and your family, SML. Have a good one. s/s Charlie

A Lib W/a masters degree

Can you imagine a Liberal with a masters degree. It must be a master padlock. LOL. And two other degrees: they must be both below zero degrees. Doesn't "snicks" sound a lot like a candy bar, you know, like "marsbar". Ya don't suppose snow has a room mate. Hey snicks, you should still look into that alternative ed school before you try the computer again. I sure wish family services would test these people before they give them a free computer. What a waste of taxpayers money.
