LITTLE FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Two central Minnesota teenagers who were killed during an alleged break-in at a man's home were cousins and high school athletes who were popular among their schoolmates, officials said.
Little Falls school officials identified the victims as cousins Haile Kifer, 18, and Nicholas Brady, 17. The shooter, 64-year-old Byron David Smith of Little Falls, was being held for second-degree murder and is likely to be charged Monday.
Kifer was a senior at Little Falls High School. Superintendent Stephen Jones said she competed in gymnastics and swimming and helped manage the boys wrestling team. Brady had attended the same school up through the previous school year, at which point he transferred to nearby Pillager High School.
Jones said the Morrison County Sheriff's Department notified him of the identity of the victims. Little Falls students have a scheduled day off Monday, but Jones said grief counselors will be on hand anyway, and students and their parents will be invited to come to school and talk about what happened. He said more counselors will be in place on Tuesday when all students return; Pillager High School also planned to have counselors available.
Jones said Brady had wrestled for Little Falls before transferring schools. "These were both friends to a lot of folks, involved in lots of activities and working their way towards graduation like so many other kids, trying to put their focus on the future," Jones said.
Family members of Kifer and Brady could not immediately be reached for comment.
Details about the shooting remained murky Sunday. Morrison County deputies visited Smith's home just north of Little Falls on Friday afternoon on a suspicious activity call, at which point they say he immediately confessed to shooting two people the previous day around noon. Deputies found the bodies in the basement.
Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel said Sunday that Smith claimed the teenagers broke into his home. But Wetzel said circumstances at the scene led investigators, including some from the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, to believe that his actions were in excess of simple self-defense.
Wetzel refused to release further details, including whether investigators believe that Smith shot the teenagers immediately upon finding them; and why he didn't report the incident immediately. Wetzel planned to hold a press conference on Monday in Little Falls, where he said he would release a fuller picture of what happened.
"We do want to give the public a clear picture of what happened," Wetzel said. He said investigators were still actively working the case.
Few details were immediately available about Smith, whose home is in a secluded area north of Little Falls and near the Mississippi River. Wetzel said he was not previously known to the sheriff's department as a troublemaker, and his name doesn't turn up any previous convictions in a state criminal history database. The Star Tribune quoted a neighbor, John Lange, who said Smith was a retired security worker and volunteer Scout leader who cared for his elderly mother until her recent death.
"He's a really decent guy. I think he just snapped," Lange told the newspaper.
A Facebook page set up to mourn Kifer and Brady was getting heavy traffic on Sunday afternoon. Fellow students and alumni from Little Falls High School were planning a Sunday night candlelight vigil at the high school football field.

Byron David Smith, 64 years of age hears noises in his basement. Now I don't know about any other senior citizen( other anyone else) confronted with people in their home who would say, "wait a second let me call 911!"
These 17 and 18 year olds were in his home without his permission. I would be scared to death! In a situation like that people don't think they react. So, his reaction was to shot. than he got scare. He second reaction was. "Oh, [filtered word], what did I do?" Now what?"
What am I going to do? Now he is scared again! Please tell me how many of us would not be scare in a situation like that?
As I was reading this about this someone just goes by my bedroom window and my heart jumped. I am alone! I grapped my gun! Who is out in my yard, by my window? It wasn't until 2 hours later that I thought call the police! Like they are going to do anything NOW! People don't think, they react! Let's find out what happen before we like judge, jury and sentence the man!
Just sayin'
I can't find anywhere in this article where it says there was a noise in the basement. All it says is that the bodies were found in the basement. Just sayin'.....
So reading your
So reading your interpretation, wildwoman, consider what would you have done had you not had a gun I know the usual line, "Guns don't kill people, people do", but without a gun, what would you have done? Called the police? Warned the students that you were home and that you heard them? I've read no indication that they were armed or dangerous. Is it possible that one could have dealt with this "break-in" without killing two teenagers?
If I was afraid I would leave
If I was afraid I would leave before I would get a gun. Still calling 911 would have been the best option and also there would be a record of what went on. Yeah he has been burglerized before, but to take someones life it isn't worth the trauma. I can see him being in shock afterwards but that doesn't excuse what happened. Don't know what happened but two lives are gone now.
So the upstanding
"victims" only fault is that they break into peoples houses..Perhaps the real victim didnt know what to do fearing retaliation. They are going to have a tough time getting 12 Jurors together in Morrison County to convict this man for defending his home and life.
"Smith claimed the teenagers
"Smith claimed the teenagers broke into his home. But Wetzel said circumstances at the scene led investigators, including some from the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, to believe that his actions were in excess of simple self-defense".
So, we dont even know for sure that the two teens broke into his house, thats just what he claims. Lets wait and see what the real story turns out to be before we just start casting judgement on either sides. We should think how the teens families are doing tonight and be sending all our prayers to them in their time of need.
I say again...
This story shouldn't be open for discussion. Not yet anyway. But since it's open I'll make a comment. Everybody seems to be taking his side of the story that they broke into his house. Who's to say he didn't lure them into the house somehow. Judging by the descriptions and the pictures of these kids they don't look like bad kids. What do you say we wait for further updates before we pass judgement, either way...
you go for your phone. I'll
you go for your phone. I'll go for my gun
The Star Tribune says
one of the "innocent" cousins had a drug problem and may have been breaking in to steal prescription drugs. What would a desperate drug addict do to get more? Maybe scare an old man into self defense? Remember this man was a well traveled federal employee and he may have not have believed that all of Little Falls citizens were trustworthy innocent people.
Musky's quote
"Judging by the descriptions and the pictures of these kids 'they don't look like bad kids'."
"What do you say we wait for further updates before we pass judgement either way."
Really Musky?
The bottom line is there is definitely more to this story.....it's just too weird.
Not bad just....
""Yes, she had an addiction problem and stuff, but that doesn't mean she deserves to get murdered at 18 years old," Shaeffel said. "I understand they came there to rob them, or whatever, but shoot them in the shoulder and call the cops."
I guess those two innocent teens went to rob that poor man and ruined his life and lost their's.
sad situation but here is my warning
No matter what the outcome is, this is a tragedy. Either the kids losing themselves to drugs and criminal acts or the murder or the 300 other options that are on the table of possibilities...
Now to my feeling about criminals...break into my house, I have one 4-shot bird shot followed by 2 shells of 00 buck shot followed by 3 slugs (yes I can get 6 shells in my 30 year old Coast to Coast 20 gauge) ready along side my bed.
Then if I need more reenforcement I have my glock loaded and ready with hollow points right next to that.
If you are in my house unlawfully, I am going to shoot first (and not to maim) and question your motive later. One thing you wont do is get the upper hand of me or my family inside our living quarters.
