Teamsters Local 120 under scrutiny, execs placed on leave

Posted: November 14, 2012 - 11:06am

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The International Brotherhood of Teamsters says it's taken over leadership of a 10,000-member local and placed its top two executives on leave, citing evidence of financial irregularities.

Teamsters spokesman Bret Caldwell says Local 120 was placed into emergency trusteeship and its leaders, Brad Slawson, Sr., and Brad Slawson, Jr., are on leave. Local 120, based in Blaine, also has offices in North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa.

A memo from international president James Hoffa says several concerns led to the trusteeship, including apparent irregularities in the local's purchase of real estate for a new union hall. The Star Tribune (http://tinyurl.com/bvy48tp ) reports the memo also says investigators also found irregularities in the operation of a bar and gaming operation in Fargo, N.D., known as the Teamsters Club.

The Slawsons could not be reached for comment.

Speaking of Joe. I guess he

Speaking of Joe. I guess he will be able to keep his union gig
in addition to his new state gig.

Who was the woman and child in the picture with him.
The advertising in this paper. It never said who they were.
Wife, sister, mother, his child, nephew, just strange -
usually it would say who they were.

I don't know Joe so, wouldn't know who they were.

Some union officials are

Some union officials are crooked, just like any other profession. I worked under 120 for 30 years, and have a very good pension to show for it. For you union haters, jealousy isn't very becoming.

union management

It's ripoffs and corruption that upset people, especially when it's the tax payers dime.
Soon a half dozen states will be asking for Federal, or tax payer bail outs for their public pension funds that are under water. When you fund your pension planning on an 8% return... shortages are going to explode. Take a look at the Long Island Railroad if you want to see a classic example of fraud by organized union crime, and a large portion of that is tax dollars.

I wonder

if Motleylarry ever calculated out how much his above average union wages cost his non-union relatives, friends and neighbor in increased product costs... oh well you got a "very good pension" out of it.

It's not the average worker who's contributing

as much to "increased product costs" as it is the CEO-types. http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/02/business/la-fi-mo-us-ceo-pay-231...

The expression "he's got his, too bad for the rest" also comes to mind re: a discussion of health insurance/ACA. Those who are insured through an employer, Medicare, Tricare . . . don't seem to care much about the uninsured. They got theirs -- too bad for the rest.

I wonder if LLR ever

I wonder if LLR ever calculated how much wages increased in non union jobs because of unions. As far as, I got mine, I worked for everything I have, and don't feel guilty about it. Am I supposed to give what I have away to non union workers? That would be the Obama way, right?

FNB, you would do well in a communist country, with that thinking. At least your hero, Obama, will run this country to your liking.

the real reason the GOP wants to get rid of unions

They drive up wages and many corporations do not want to pay their workers a living wage, or offer benefits. They would rather funnel that money to their CEO's and stock holders.

The unions mainly support Democrats, but not always, they do endorse and contribute to some GOP candidates. Without the unions the Democrats would lose valuable campaign contributions. The GOP has the rich to finance them. Unions represent the fading middle class. That's why corporations want unions destroyed completely.

I am reminded of the story I heard as a child, about the Little Red Hen, I think. Nobody would help her cultivate the ground, or plant the seeds, or harvest the wheat, but they all wanted to eat the grain, and get their fair share.

purposed

what you don't get is the government does not subidize any of the teamster pension fund. Yes, thank you, I will be just fine in case the pension money runs out. What you won't see is me running to the government crying about how bad I have it. We are all responsible for our own retirement funds. If someone is unable to take care of themselves due to injury, sickness, or loss of the breadwinner, I will be the first to help. What I don't like is the entitlement some have about the rest of America taking care of them. By the way, your misspelling of Motley is very childish.
