Stevenson named Outstanding Young Minnesotan

Posted: October 16, 2012 - 7:20pm

Taylor Stevenson of Baxter was chosen as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans (TOYM) by the Minnesota Jaycees. Stevenson is the DFL candidate for Senate District 10.

For more than 50 years, the TOYM event has been a program which the Minnesota Jaycees, in partnership with their local chapters, rewards young men and women who have shown dedicated service to their community, demonstrated outstanding leadership, or have achieved excellence in their field of work/study.

The ceremony and reception will be held Dec. 1, at the Doubletree by Hilton in Saint Louis Park. Reception will include a dinner and speeches from all honorees.

“This is a great honor, and I am very humbled to have been chosen,” Stevenson said in a statement. “I have been working very hard for this area, and to be in the company of these other great Minnesotans is an amazing feeling.”

Stevenson has been an active member of Building Bridges, Poverty Bound, Bridges of Hope, and the Minnesota Farmers Union. He also spearheaded the “Yes, Yes” campaign to help area public schools.

No

But I heard he recently enlisted in the Marines so that he can find out what it is like to be a man. Maybe he will learn also some common sense too while he is at it.

Terroristic Threats

Seriously the Jaycees picked someone that made terroristic threats against the Crow Wing County Commissioners? After listening to the latest debate on KKIN this week the only thing he is outstanding at is making things up.

People

The Internet has really changed the way people "speak" about each other. If you do not have anything nice or positive to say, why not just keep it to yourself? Forum boards and comment sections like this have allowed us to become one of the rudest societies. Some people just use boards like this to make stupid comments that they would not dare say in person. In days past, if you did say it in person you would have been shunned for your shear stupidity. Man, I wish we could go back to the days when I was young.

We have a city council candidate in Ward 3

who was ARRESTED for making death threats to a city council member (who is also running) and there is no discussion about this.....it better come up in the debate on Thursday night. This guy actually DID make death threats.
Taylor did not. Taylor made an off hand comment to someone he thought was a friend, only the couple was on Paul Gazelka's committee. DUH.

Typical change the subject

Can't defend Stevensons action so you switch topics. He did make threats , he apologized. Seems to be a modus operendi for him. Say lies, then say oops sorry. After listening to his debates I have absolutely no respect what so ever for this kid.

dedicated service =

dedicated service = self-service
learned well from his mentor by constantly patting himself on
the back.
Doing volunteer work is good, but not a job.
Some people his age are working in the private sector and
contributing to the economy by paying taxes especially federal taxes.
I think he would be better off in the long run by working in the
private sector for some years . Whether he wins this race or not, the lack of work experience is a negative.
He should be able to get a job, but possibly would have to move and that would be a good thing for him.

Sadie, Do people who work in

Sadie,
Do people who work in the public sector pay taxes? Is a public sector job not as "real" as a private sector job? Is it somehow less valuable?

Get a job

I agree with Sadie, he should just get a job. He is a young boy college grad living with Mom yand working part time- great work ethic! He campaigns on raising taxes. Easy to raise everyone else's taxes when you pay none yourself. I think most of us had to figure out how to pay second half real estate taxes on Monday, do you think it was even a fleeting thought for Tay? I think Mr silver spoon in your mouth needs some real life experience.

Public Sector Job

The Marines would be a great public sector job for this fine young fellow living in his parent's basement apartment. They would give him a haircut, shave and three squares per day. On top of that he could get in excellent physical condition and learn how to get up out of bed very early in the morning. Maybe then he would learn the value of a dollar.....

I wonder

if he claimed the money he made mowing lawns on his taxes?

The DFL loves these "green" candidates because all their candidates become very dirty, quite quickly. Need to get Lil' Tay Tay in there soon.

Amen to the figuring out how

Amen to the figuring out how to pay property taxes on Monday. Now, on the difference between public/private sector jobs, which to me is common sense.

To begin with, public sector jobs are paid with taxpayer money either federal or state depending on the job. They are paid by the private sector well, most of it. Of course, the public sector pays federal/state taxes, but it is a mere % of what their job cost. How many people in the private sector would it take to pay for one public sector employee?

The property, sales, gas, telephone, are meant for certain items and that is it. Social security and medicare are supposed to be saved for your account,. Ha Ha on that.
The atmosphere on the job is different in the public and private sector. More differences in the way they are run.

For the Taylor supporters

I meant to ask this question of the Taylor supporters.
It says in his ads that he is a teacher, but he has no teaching degree. How does that work?
If he only does sub teaching can you do that without a teaching degree?

No, you don't need a teaching degree to substitute teach. All you need is a pulse. Substitute teachers are nothing but placeholders while the real teacher is recovering from the flu. Funny thing is, it is possible to earn a substantial amount of money while substitute teaching. I know several.

Stevenson would mever make the marines

First of all, you have to pass an IQ test (not found in DFL dictionary), second, you can't bring your mommy, Third- you can't cry like he did in front of the senior ladies at the luncheon last week, and Fourth- the Marines are looking for A Few Good Men, not a snot-nosed punk kid.

Sadie, The tax dollars

Sadie,
The tax dollars collected from public sector workers go into the same pot as the tax dollars collected from private sector workers. All workers pay taxes. That tax money goes to provide services, roads, bridges, etc that EVERYBODY uses. One is not better than the other, nor is it more important, or more valuable.

I call [filtered word] on your comment that private sector and public sector job atmosphere's are different. An Accountant working in the public sector does the same basic job as an Accountant working in the private sector. As do clerical or office workers. A doctor working in a "free clinic" practices the same medicine as a doctor working in a private clinic no matter who signs the paycheck. Granted, there are some types of jobs that don't cross over and that's understandable.

Each and every job is a good job and payroll taxes are subtracted from both private and public sector employment. I too, would suggest that Taylor get a job, but I won't discriminate against what type of job he gets.

OD, Hmmm, OD= ?

The difference between private v/s public employees is the cost and time to get rid of a bad one, so there is a difference.
I know of state employees that drank their lunch and drove state vehicles drunk and it took years to terminate them after many thousands of dollars spent trying to help them. State and Federal employees have the "ranger Joe" union BAs to defend them and keep the management from firing them as they should. Those kind of public employees give the excellent (Majority of) public employees a bad name and cost us millions. The good public employees are pretty much afraid to say anything to the bosses about the trash.
Private employers would have booted them long before, with the support of the rest of their employees.

TOYM Program Criteria - Which 3 did Stevenson Qualify?

In, 1954 recipient Arthur M. Kraft designed the "Silver Hands" trophy that each Honoree receives. The inscription on its base reads:

“The hope of mankind lies in the hands of youth and action”.

Each Honoree has shown a commitment to that hope, reminding all Americans that no problem is too difficult when handled with grace, ingenuity, courage, and determination." The trophy is named the ‘JAYSON’, an acronym standing for “Jaycees: Active Youth Serving Our
Nation.” Winners are selected on their achievement or contribution in at least three of the following areas:

* personal improvement or accomplishment;
* financial success or economic innovation;
* social improvement to major contemporary problems;
* philanthropic contribution or voluntary service;
* politics or government service; scientific or technological contributions;
* legal reform; cultural achievement (literature, history, education, arts);
* academic leadership or accomplishment;
* moral and religious leadership;
* athletic accomplishment;
* success in the influence of public opinion;
* any other important contribution to the community, state, or nation.

If Stevenson qualified to win this, he either was not truthful or it is meaningless.

Stevenson's role model got the Nobel

Maybe Stevenson's "hope and change" message did it.

After all his role model got an award without doing anything.

Taylor deserves this.

I have personally worked with this man on numerous projects in the community and I can tell you first hand that he absolutely deserves this award. Aside of what was mentioned in the article Taylor is also a mentor with Kinship Partners, has served on several boards in the community, did not threaten anyone (be careful what you say to Josh H. he is very sensitive) and is dedicated to our community. As far as his age is concerned experienced old people have been screwing up our country for generations. Now it is our turn to try to make this a better place to live. In addition, if all of you haters out there could list how they serve our community that would be great otherwise maybe you should keep your unfounded opinions to yourselves.
