FastTRAC manufacturing courses set at CLC

Those interested in learning about four FastTRAC pre-manufacturing courses to be offered twice weekly at Central Lakes College (CLC) are invited to attend an information session of their choice scheduled on the Brainerd campus.

Information sessions will take place at 5 p.m., in the Rotunda Lounge (across from the Student Services windows) at CLC. Sessions will be held Sept. 27 and Oct. 4, 11, 16, and 23. Each is expected to run about 45 minutes.

CLC is working with Rural Minnesota Concentrated Employment Program (CEP), Independent School District 181 Adult Basic Education (ABE), and several local manufacturers to build a pipeline of future workers for skilled jobs. This initiative, funded by a grant, will provide free introductory courses in manufacturing. The courses will include several speakers from industry and tours of manufacturing plants in the local area.

FastTRAC is intended for anyone who is unemployed/underemployed in the community who would be interested in pursuing a manufacturing career and benefit from the training and resources through this partnership.

With more than 292,000 jobs in 8,500 businesses, manufacturing remains one of the largest employing industries in the state of Minnesota. It accounts for about one in every nine jobs in the state, many of which tend to be higher-paying jobs.

Manufacturers are looking for qualified workers to fill jobs for which FastTRAC provides the foundation.

First-year students will enroll in four courses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 2:50 p.m., during the 2012-13 academic year at CLC’s Brainerd campus. The courses and their schedule:

1. Adult Basic Education Basic Computers, Writing, and Math Skills, Oct. 23 – Dec. 13, 2012.

2. CLC COMP 1101 Computer Fundamentals, Jan. 15-March 7, 2013.

3. CLC RAST 1110 Introduction to Manufacturing, March 19-May 9, 2013.

4. CLC RAST 2370 Topics in Robotics (Manufacturing Math), March 19-May 9, 2013.

The classes could help an entry-level employee who has the potential to go on into a college manufacturing program but is in need of refresher coursework in order to be successful.

The classes also could be a fit for current students interested in a new pathway to manufacturing jobs through the free mentorship and training of this program.
