Marriage Amendment program canceled
The Marriage Amendment program scheduled for Tuesday at Central Lakes College has been canceled. Sen. Warren Limmer, R-Maple Grove, author of the amendment, notified League of Women Voters of the Brainerd Lakes Area President Sandy Reuther Friday of his intent to withdraw from the program. Citing concerns about the program format as well as his concern about the State League of Women Voters’ position opposing the amendment, Sen. Limmer wrote he would not be participating.
The board of directors of the Brainerd lakes area league had planned the Tuesday event as an informational meeting to make voters aware of the pros and cons of this constitutional amendment. Reuther stated that without Sen. Limmer’s participation there could not be a fair and balanced program, thus the board agreed to cancel the event.
Future voter services events of the League will go on as planned. They include “Meet the Candidates” forums for Brainerd School Board on Oct. 15, for Brainerd and Baxter City Council and Crow Wing County commissioners on Oct. 18, and for State Senate 10 and State House 10A on Oct. 23. More information about these forums will be released in the near future.
The League of Women Voters encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influence public policy through education and advocacy. It does not support or oppose any political party or candidate for office.
Sen Limmer could not be contacted for comment early Monday afternoon.
