Brainerd police asking public's help with attempted abductions

Posted: September 10, 2012 - 7:51pm

Brainerd police are asking for the public’s help in locating a suspect who attempted to abduct two children Friday and Saturday in Brainerd.

Brainerd Police Chief Corky McQuiston said police are investigating two suspicious incidents that occurred Friday and Saturday and police believe they may be relating involving an older male in a truck approaching children.

The first incident was reported about 7:30 p.m. Friday where a 4-year-old girl was riding her bicycle in the area of the 1100 block of Norwood Street, when she was approached by a male in a silver-colored truck.

The male told the girl to put her bicycle in the back of the truck and get in the truck. The girl was with other children and left the area immediately telling an adult relative.

The second incident was reported at about noon Saturday, where a 9-year-old boy was riding his bicycle in the area of the 900 block of South Eighth Street, when he was approached by a male in a truck that pulled up next to him.

The male told the boy to get into the truck. The boy did not get in the vehicle and went home telling a parent.

Both children were unharmed and the male did not attempt to get out of the truck.

The descriptions from the children lead police to believe the incidents may be related.

The suspect was described as an older white male with a skinny face, short hair with possibly a short beard and a deep voice. The vehicle was described as an older regular cab full size pick-up. The truck was silver and may have scratches along the length of the driver’s side and a louder exhaust.

Anyone with information regarding the suspect or vehicle is asked to contact Brainerd Police at 829-2805.

First page news! Attempted abductions!

This should be above the fold on page one! It was on channel five.

And it happened Friday!

Why do we do inhumane

Why do we do inhumane experiments on animals when we have pedophiles to experiment on?

I too wanna know y this is

I too wanna know y this is not front page news. I live just blocks away from both norwood and s.8th st. My 4 children love playing outside and if this man is trying to take a child thats with a group(the buddy system) and a young boy in the middle of the day this should have been on the front page right away, whats stopping him from taking a child playing in a yard? its nice to know that the local paper cares about the children in our community. The brainerd dispatch needs to get its head out of its *ss.

this is an epic failure

I would like to be the first to congratulate the Brainerd Dispatch on being DAYS late on maybe the most important news issue this town has seen in years.

There are CHILDREN AT RISK and I see it on a cities news network before I see it on the Dispatch website then have to wait days to see it in the paper.

You people failed at your jobs and should be completely ashamed of yourselves and give a written apology to all the kids, parents and grandparents you put at risk by being so incompetent.

I am truly embarrassed by the lack of information and knowledge of this by our cities paper.

SHAME

BDD Should be ashamed in its lack of concern on this. How did a tv station in the cities get this before the local paper? Surely the police released as a press release and was available for all media to pick up at the same time, or are the Brainerd police on the pay of the cities newspaper?

I agree this should have been

I agree this should have been put in the paper right away and on the front page. But I would also like to point out why were these kids outside alone where they could be approached to begin with. Just wondering, Because I would never let my 4 year old outside without someone being within 20 feet from her.

Doing it wrong

This should be on the front page, as others have said. Also, parroting this story from channel 5 news, days after it fresh and effective, is a failure. What has been going on? Is there no accountability at the Dispatch?

I'm in.

I'm going to have to pipe in on this one too.

Dispatch, you have a description of the vehicle and somewhat of a sketch of what this guy looks like......someone must have some clue who this guy is!

Get that news out there quicker and don't wait until it is too late!!

If this guy is from the area,

If this guy is from the area, someone will read this and be like i know who that is, so call the Brainerd PD and tell them. Older silver pick up with some kind of scratches down the drivers side, not hard to spot. Lets get this guy found and off our streets ppl, if u care about our youth then do all u can, pay attetion to the strange cars in your area, report stuff u see, STOP TURNING A BLIND EYE TO STUFF.

We realize this is important

We realize this is important to many of our readers - and we've been busy today discussing and piecing together what took place, in order to discover ways we can improve our service. Here's the timeline:

2:01 pm Monday - The Brainerd Police Department faxed news on Friday's possible abduction attempts to the media.

3:24 pm Monday - A Dispatch reporter tweeted news of the possible abduction reports on her twitter account, which was then automatically added to the "On the fly' news info box on our website home page.

7:51 pm Monday - News brief of possible attempted abductions was posted as part of 'local briefs' article on our website and on page 3A in our printed newspaper for Tuesday.

newman IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN

newman IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FRONT PAGE NEWS!!!! Not in the "local briefs on page 3A", We are talking about our CHILDREN! y are you trying to make excuses for the paper? Just say you messed up. It was on the news this weekend, I heard about it from a friend who seen something posted on Hearts Fb page on Sat.sometime after 2pm. If it was spreading like wildfire on Sat. then it should have been on the front page Sunday, END OF STORY

blablablacksheep, I'm not offering excuses

I'm not offering excuses.

I said we're looking at how we can improve and I shared the timeline because someone asked.

This type of information is important to our readers and we didn't get it to all of them in a timely manner. We need to get the information sooner by developing better communications with the PD. We need to do better.

One of the reported events happened Friday, one on Saturday.

It will not be on the front page of the printed newspaper if it happens on Saturday. The weekend edition is printed Friday night.

scary, there are times when you are a complete [filtered word].

People are worried for their children, and you want to put politics in this? Crawl back under your rock, and hope that no child is ever abducted while you laugh at everybody.

I heard this was part of ACORN's mobile voter registration ...

office to their "get out the vote" campaign. They keep going after younger and younger people to vote because they don't check them in Minnesota.

Just kidding.

Of course this abduction story should have been on the front page. They should just admit they failed and move on.
