SEPTEMBER 7

20 years ago (1992)

Minnesota’s jobless rate fell one and one-half points, from 5.5 percent in June to 4.0 percent in July, but Crow Wing County’s rate fell even farther. The county’s unemployment rate plummeted from 5.7 to 3.7 percent.

(Photo) Ernest Gosse of Meadowview Trailer Court trapped this albino pocket gopher in Sylvan Prairie, just east of Fisherman’s Bridge. The creature is the only one of its kind he has seen, though he has trapped gophers for many years. Gosse had it mounted.

(Photos) Workers at Rademacher Industries are shown constructing one of the 50-foot long launches now being produced. A demo was conducted for 40 resorters on Mille Lacs Lake of the boat which can carry 30 fishermen and retails for $13,500.

60 years ago (1952)

Fullback George Montgomery and halfback Duane Lindberg each tallied a pair of touchdowns to lead the Warriors to a 25-0 season opening win at Superior East. The forward wall, backed up by John Jelacie, kept the opponents outside the 40-yard line.

80 years ago (1932)

With only about $100 in the treasury, and no other way in sight to raise more money, the Manganese school district board appealed to the state for aid to prevent dissolution or consolidation. The Riverton district offered its facilities so that the 34 students are able to study.

100 years ago (1912)

Teamsters and farmers are objecting because the fountain at the YMCA and the trough at the hay market have been dry for two weeks. In the hottest period Brainerd has had there is no place where a farmer or drayman can water his horses.

Farm bill

Both the House and Senate versions CUT food stamp funding.

We should cut farm subsidies for those who are having successful years.

Thanks south

I do agree. Especially the corporate ones. If they are cutting how much of last bill went to food stamps? I heard from a pretty good source( I think) that 80% if new one goes to food stamps.

Funny how

The name of bills bear no correlation to what is actually in them. I did read that 80% goes to food for the poor, including food stamps and school lunches. So the proposed cuts would be $10 to 12 billion, depending on which version passes both houses.

That is two months in Afghanistan, to put it in perspective and as a suggestion where they could cut also.
