Ski Gull's dedication came in 1962 as Mount Ski Gull. Now in its 50th anniversary year, the lakes area winter recreation site is changing its name back to Mount Ski Gull.

Fifty years ago, in the summer of 1962, Lt. Gov. Karl Rolvaag dedicated the newly built Mount Ski Gull.

The dedication featured an amphibious duck, a band, four dancing girls and the newly crowned Miss Mount Ski Gull, Miss Andrea Hricke. Mount Ski Gull began with three T-bar lifts, eight runs and an 800-square-foot chalet.

Over the years, the name was shortened to Ski Gull, a new chairlift was added, four more runs, a tubing hill, rental, terrain park and a much larger chalet. To celebrate the 50th anniversary, Ski Gull is changing its name back to Mount Ski Gull. Executive Director Dale Bosch, and the board of directors felt going back to its original name was not only appropriate on its birthday, but it makes good marketing sense. According to Bosch, the most common comment about Ski Gull is: “I had no idea it was here.”

“Many visitors to the area and even new residents have no idea what Ski Gull is,” Bosch said in a news release. “However, by adding the word Mount, it becomes pretty clear we are a recreational hill and not a water skiing club on Gull Lake.”

In addition to the name change, a new logo has been designed by Adventure Creative, a local advertising agency, and a new website was developed by Midwest Captions, both businesses are in Brainerd.

Mount Ski Gull will celebrate its anniversary at the annual fall fundraiser party on Sept. 27 at Arrowwood Lodge at Brainerd Lakes, formerly the Lodge at Brainerd Lakes.

In addition, officer elections were hosted at the August board of directors meeting resulting in multiple changes to the Mount Ski Gull Board. After serving two terms as board president, Laurie Fitterer will be stepping down to a director position. DJ Dondelinger, formerly vice president, will step into the board president’s position. Both positions will be for a period of one year. Director Bart Taylor will move into the vice president position.

Board Secretary Ellen Frank will step down as an active board member into a non-voting ex-official capacity, remaining as a consultant to the board. The Mount Ski Gull community gave special thanks to all Franks has done during the years. Franks will continue to serve on events and fund raising committees. Shana Krantz was voted the new board secretary. New board members were also added: Sean Kaneski of Pequot Lakes and Brett Cote of Nisswa.
