Kari Green joined four others running for three open seats with the Brainerd School Board, when she filed Thursday afternoon.

The 41-year-old mother of five said that her decision to run was based on wanting to be heard.

“I would have a voice (if elected),” said Green, who currently works as a personal care assistant. “I want to be a part of the decision-making process and be a voice for those that need a voice.”

Green’s children range in ages from 8 to 23, with two children still in the district. She added that on top of having a voice, a primary focus for her would be to keep Christ in the schools.

Green currently resides in rural Pierz with her husband James and their children.

Green joins Sally Jacobsen, Bruce McComas, Maurice Olson and Bob Nystrom in the race for school board election.

Jim Hunt, Reed Campbell and Kent Montgomery have terms that expire on Dec. 31, 2012. Hunt announced that he will not run for re-election. Campbell and Montgomery are undecided and have not yet filed for re-election.

Candidates can file for school board election until 5 p.m. on Aug. 14 with the general election conducted on Nov. 6. Affidavits of candidacy are available at the school district office at 804 Oak St. The filing fee is $2 and candidates must be 21 years of age or more on assuming office date, must have been a district resident for 30 days before the general election and must have no other affidavit on file for any other office in the same general election.
