Bicyclist killed Tuesday at Highway 371 and Excelsior

A 51-year-old Brainerd man died Tuesday when the bicycle he was riding and a pick-up truck collided at about 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 371 and Excelsior Road.

The Minnesota State Patrol said Gregory P. Marsolek, 51, of Brainerd, was killed at the accident. Marsolek was east-bound on Excelsior when a collision took place between his bicycle and a pick-up truck driven by Nell C. Rearick, 53, of Bemidji. The truck was north-bound in the left lane of Highway 371, proceeding with the green light. Rearick suffered no apparent injuries.

Responding at the scene were the state patrol, the Baxter Police Department, the Brainerd Fire Department and North Ambulance.

Very sad news

Very sad news, but if anything comes out of this, I hope the State looks at putting in some type of bridge or tunnel for pedestrians/bicyclists.

There is no safe way to cross 371 along that corridor. The high rate of speed, lack of sidewalks/bike lanes, and heavy congestion all make this a dangerous crossing point.

It is really bad going west on 210 just before the 371 intersection, where the shoulder turns into a right turn lane (by Kohls). In order to cross the turn lane, the bicyclist must actually ride in it for na distance.

When they reconstructed the left turn lanes between Target and Best Buy, they killed the one safe spot to cross 371.

Prayers to the victims families (bith the deceased and the motorist)

i have a grand idea

Instead of assuming you know what happened and commenting on that or just pushing the blame because you are or are not a bike rider...possibly wait for the police report and comment then.

No matter if the driver of the car or the bike was at fault, it ended in tragedy.

How about thoughts and prayers to everyone involved?

Grand Idea

Disagree with dems- I liked your comment very much. I would sure like to see comments such as this more often, instead of the constant negativity and bashing as seems to be the case all too frequently. This case is sad for both families. .. Does who did what wrong really matter? We are all HUMAN and therefore we make mistakes. Thank you dems for the point you made!!
